Foundation Plan
• Foundation plan
– Plan view drawing in section
– Location and size of footings, piers, columns,
foundation walls, beams, pilasters
– Usually drawn after the floor plan and elevations
have been roughed out

• Basements
– Popular where frost penetration is several feet deep
– Provide usable space at less cost
• Basement plan
– Combination foundation and floor plan
– Required for a split-level house

Preparing to Draw a Foundation or
Basement Plan
• Study information on the preliminary floor plan,
plot plan, and elevations
• Use the floor plan as an underlay
• Determine type and size of exterior walls
– Stud wall frame
– Stud wall with brick veneer and brick ledge

• Examine elevations and plot plan
– Need for stepped footings or retaining walls
– Identify grade problems
• Determine size of footings and foundation
• Check soil bearing capacity
• Refer to local building codes

Traditional Drawing Techniques
• Steps for drawing a foundation plan and a
basement plan are similar

Manual Drafting: Foundation Plan
1. Select scale (usually 1/4" = 1'-0")
2. Locate outline of foundation walls
3. Draw foundation walls, piers, and pilasters (posts)
4. Indicate breaks in foundation wall
5. Lay out and draw wall footings

6. Draw footings for piers and columns (posts)
7. Draw footings for fireplace and chimney
8. Locate and draw supporting beam (if required)
9. Show size, spacing, and direction of joists or
trusses
10. Identify location of section details

11. Add dimensions to show size of all aspects of
foundation
12. Letter any necessary notes
13. Add proper material symbols
14. Add title block, scale, and drawing name

Manual Drafting: Basement Plan
1. Select scale (usually 1/4" = 1'-0")
2. Draw exterior foundation
3. Draw footings for walls, chimney, fireplace, piers
and columns (posts)
4. Locate and draw the beam and supports or
bearing wall partition(s)
5. Design room layout in basement area, darken
lines

6. Indicate breaks in walls for windows, doors
7. Locate and draw stairs
8. Show size, spacing, direction of floor joist or
trusses
9. Identify location of sections required to provide
additional information
10. Locate and draw bath fixtures, furnace, water
heater, storage tank, water softener, sump, floor
drains

11. Add dimensions to show all features

CADD Drawing Techniques
• Drawing is created at full scale, 1'- 0" = 1'- 0", or
1:1
• Appropriate scale is applied when drawing is
plotted

CADD: Foundation or Basement Plan
1. Make copy of floor plan on new layer
2. Draw outside line of foundation walls, delete
outside line of floor plan wall if they do not
coincide
3. Draw all footings
4. Draw stairs, interior walls, windows, doors for
basement plan

5. Draw interior walls, insert door and window
symbols into plan
6. Dimension plan
7. Insert symbols for appliances, fixtures, and
furnace
8. Add cutting plane symbols where required
