What is
Theatre For Youth and Outreach Program
Open since 1988, the Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts, Inc established the Theatre for Youth and
Outreach Program (TFY) formerly known as Educational Theatre Program during the 1993-94 season.
The program was developed and introduced to serve as a presenter of professionally produced touring theatrical
productions geared to young audiences.
In 1998 another component was added offering the first weeklong summer fine arts camp. This became a
permanent feature of the TFY program. In 2000, the King Center introduced an artist in residence program and
outreach opportunities at various community venues.
The outreach component of the TFY program was added with the goal of serving residents and children in the
community that are unable to experience programs held at the King Center. Community venues include but are
not limited to, organizations that serve persons with disabilities, senior residents, youth at risk organizations,
public schools, private schools, and alternative programs for youth. Currently the King Center works in partnership
with 21st Century Afterschool Program, a program of the Brevard County Public School District to include offerings
in the performing arts. Over three hundred students first through sixth grade benefit from this effort.
Outreach efforts aligns with community “prevention strategies” to include theatre and the performing arts.
Organizations that have benefited include Club Esteem, an alternative afterschool program, and Brevard County
Child Care Association as well as several Brevard County Public Schools.
Artist in residence program provides children the opportunity to access master teachers in the field of the
performing arts. Opportunities that are available for participating students to be incorporated into professionally
produced work presented on the King Center main stage or other community venues. The King Center has
continued to cultivate various partnerships within the community and has demonstrated sustainability through its’
collaborative efforts.

Relevance of
Curriculum and
arts in the classroom….

society, arts education is an urgent part of any
contemporary education- not only in training kids to
succeed in the world of work, but to develop whole

Learning is continuous. The essential purpose is to improve the
learning and achievement of all students.
Teachers play a very vital and important role in increasing the
intellectual and artistic literacy of young people. Sharing your gift
of teaching through knowledge and experience will ensure student
success.
Arts integration is an important resource for educators to
coordinate innovative ideas, methods and skills to teach children
and prepare them for the future.
Education has a very high value and should be used to challenge
students intellectually and EMPOWER them to be good learners
and solve problems
In addition to being parents, you are very important in setting the
tone first as a MENTOR and a COACH for your children.
For over fifteen years the King Center has offered arts and
educational theatre programs suitable for students and families
with affordable ticket prices. The King Center Theatre For Youth
and Outreach Program provides the opportunity for parents to
share in the experience and communicate with their children.
To augment the theatre experience an etiquette guide is available
for our young theatre goers that emphasizes social etiquette. Study
resource guides are also provided to guide teachers in
strengthening students theatrical experience.
Curriculum and the arts helps to develop aesthetic awareness and
strengthen student understanding and appreciation of the work of
artists

various interactive programs

Companion workshops for students before or following a performance

Partnerships
2005-2006 King Center and Brevard County Public Schools were selected
into the prestigious Kennedy Center Partners In Education Program. There
are 100 active partnerships throughout the nation. We are extremely
honored to be a part of this collaboration that affords valuable arts and
educational opportunities to the Brevard Community
The Kennedy Center Partner In Education program is designed to assist
arts organizations throughout the nation develop and/or expand
educational partnerships with their local school systems.
The primary purpose of these partnerships is to provide professional
development in the arts for teachers supported with resources from the
Kennedy Center.
As a result of the partnership with Brevard County Public Schools and the
Kennedy Center Partner In Education Program the King Center frequently
offer professional development and other training models for teachers.
