Bridging the Gap?
Contribution to casualty reduction – chasing rainbows?
Better training – Better riding – Fewer casualties
How successful are we at linking riders to post test
training?
Research
To find out:
How many attendees do post test training?
Who attends BikeSafe?
How does this relate to academic research?
Are we targeting riders at risk of injury?
Is their risk reduced after doing BikeSafe?
Post test training
21% of respondents have undertaken post test training
within a year of attending a BikeSafe session
But
The majority of respondents intend to do training in the
future
We’re pushing at an open door
Barriers to training
“Too busy, lack of time” (71%)
“Lack of money” (34%)
“Cost of the course” (30%)
But riders have strong intentions to do training in the
future
Who attends BikeSafe?
Attendees tend to be:
Male
Middle aged
Own sport / touring bikes
Are comfortably well off
Professional workers
As mapped against Mast and Mosaic
databases
Overachieving

Underachieving
Is their collision risk reduced?
This is a difficult question to answer
We don’t have enough data yet
But
BikeSafe isn’t training, it is assessment and a gateway to
training
Piloting 2 day workshops with direct input from training
providers
Reaching higher risk groups – Track based workshops
What next?
New evaluation framework is being put in place
There will be a series of surveys over two years
We will be able to profile riders in terms of beliefs,
behaviours and attitude.
We can now set baselines to improve against
