The Process – Phase 2
December 2011: Traveled to Harrisonburg, VA, to review all
selections, examined all textbooks submitted to the state, and
selected top three to four publishers.
January 2012: Preview sets arrive to schools within first three
weeks after holiday break
January/February 2012: All teachers and administrators invited to
review materials

The Process – Phase 4
February/March 2012: Teachers encouraged to make use of
materials in elementary and to use online resources in secondary
March 2012: Demonstrations by textbook representatives at
Buford
March 2012: Lead teachers and reading specialists meet once
more with every grade level to discuss whether or not to
recommend purchase

Elementary Recommendations
For kindergarten through sixth grades, it is
recommended that Benchmark Literacy be
purchased based on the following:
strong, consistent, and common foundation for reading
alignment to Virginia Standards of Learning
matches the needs of teachers
supplements program already in existence
Secondary
For grades 7-12, it is recommended that Holt
McDougal Literature and Write Source be
purchased based on the following:
common foundation for skill-based curriculum, pacing,
and assessments in both reading and writing
alignment to the 2010 Virginia Standards of Learning to
be implemented during the 2012-2013 academic year
supports BLAST initiative in that all student and teacher
materials will be web-based
