Management Tools
● Command Line Interface (CLI) - Script File based tool to configure
switch functions via a local serial connection to the V24 serial port or
remote connection via telnet.
● Telnet Server - Allows users to configure the switch using CLI over an
Ethernet connection
● Web-based Interface - Web pages accessed with a standard browser
for switch configuration and diagnostics.
● Remote Monitoring (RMON) - A standard network management
protocol that allows monitoring and protocol analysis of a local area
network gathered at a single workstation.
● Backup – Allows switch configuration to be backed up to a memory
backup adapter (EAM), to a server via TFTP, or to a PC
● DHCP Option 82 - Allows a DHCP server that supports option 82 to
assign the same IP address to any device connected to a particular
switch port.

Security Capabilities
●Connexium Managed Switches provide the following capabilities
for added security
● Port Security (IP and MAC address based) – Restricts port access to
devices with defined IP address or MAC addresses.
● SNMP v1 and v2 – Port Security
● Telnet/Web Access - Enabled or disabled,
● Switch Configurator Software Function - Enabled or disabled
Schneider Electric - Connectivity Solutions – Joe Benedetto –July , 2010

Connexium Managed Switch
Timing Protocols
● Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) – Switch timing is
synchronized to a network master clock.
● Precision Time Protocol (PTP) - IEEE1588 standard for time
synchronization. Similar to SNTP but more precise.
● Both protocols can exist in parallel in the same network
Schneider Electric - Connectivity Solutions – Joe Benedetto –July , 2010
21
Connexium Managed Switch
Filtering
● Traffic Limiter - Limits the data rate for different types of traffic, such as
broadcast and multicast packets that a switch port can receive or transmit.
Reduces the harmful effects of data storms on the network.
● Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN) – Allows the creation of a logical
subgroup of devices within a larger network in accordance with IEEE 802.1Q.
Used to limit broadcasts and increase communication security. Enables greater
flexibility when architecting a network.
● Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) Snooping - Improves network
efficiency by minimizing multicast traffic. Multicast management protocol that
allows the switch to analyze incoming IGMP packets and create a multicast list
of ports that belong to each multicast group.
● Generic Attribute Registration Protocol (GMRP) - Improves network
efficiency by minimizing multicast traffic. Ability to register and de-register
attribute values, such as VLAN identifiers and multicast group membership
across a network

Performance Optimization
● Quality of Service (QoS) - Provides different priority levels to different
applications, users, or data flow, to maintain a level of performance.
Traffic can be prioritized based on message or port.
● Message Priority - Supports 4 priority queues, high priority data traffic is
not disrupted during times with high data traffic enabling deterministic
performance.
● Port Priority - Data packets with no priority information will be transmitted
according to the priority of the port.
● Flow Control - Limits traffic during times of high traffic and transmits a
“Pause” frame to the end device, indicating the device should stop
sending data when using full duplex communications.
● Differentiated Service Code Points ( DSCP) - A 6-bit field in the
header of IP packets to classify and prioritize traffic. Used to enable
prioritization.
● Fast Aging after Disconnection - All device addresses learned by a
port are removed from the switch buffer if the link goes down.

Connexium Managed Switch
Redundancy Capabilities for high availability
● RSTP (Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol) - Industry standard protocol
(IEEE 802.1) enabling deployment of ring and mesh architectures.
● MRP ( Media Redundancy Protocol) - An IEC standard (IEC 62439)
enabling deployment of ring architectures.
● HIPER-Ring ( High Performance Redundancy) - A propriety protocol for
ring configurations.
● Ring Coupling – Interconnecting 2 rings that are using either the MRP
or HIPER-Ring protocols.
● Shared Switch Ring Coupling – Terminating 2 rings on one or two
switches.
● Dual Input Power Supply - Dual power source connections to the
switch power supply.
Schneider Electric - Connectivity Solutions – Joe Benedetto –July , 2010

Connexium Managed Switch
Diagnostic Capabilities
● Log Files - HTML file that logs up to 2000 events, with a time stamp that
contains system information and port statistics
● LED Indicators - For power, link/activity, fault detection and redundancy
manager.
● Alarm Relay - External relay contact that alarms on configured switch status,
such as power source error detection, temperature, ring redundancy,
connection error detection etc.
● SNMP Traps - User can configure a switch to send SNMP traps for configured
switch parameters to a device; you need to use a network management
software that support SNMP traps.
● Port Mirroring - Copies data passing through one port (source) to another port
to allow troubleshooting with a network protocol analysis tool.
● IEEE 802.1ab Topology Discovery - Enables the automatic detection of
devices and network topology mapping.
Schneider Electric - Connectivity Solutions – Joe Benedetto –July , 2010
25
Connexium Managed Switch
EtherNet/IP Adapter
● Adapter Capability - The ability for the switch to function as an
EtherNet/IP adapter for implicit real-time I/O messaging and explicit
messaging. Enables PLC access to switch diagnostic data and allows
limited configuration changes such as enable/disable a port.

Managed Switches
● Where to use
● Complex networks with high network traffic
● Applications where multiple priority levels for different types of data are
needed
● When an application must handle time critical data
● When you need to identify errors that can lead to network downtime
● When redundancy is required for high network availability
● When security requires access limiting
● For network bridge control and IT networks
● In high electrical noise environments (switches w/fiber optic connections)
● When connecting buildings with different potentials (switches w/fiber optic
connections
Schneider Electric - Connectivity Solutions – Joe Benedetto –July , 2010
28
System Architecture
Star Network Architecture
● Star network architecture is simple to install and maintain, where the
loss of connection to one device does not effect the communication of
the remaining end devices.
● A star network architecture can be used when network redundancy is
not required
Schneider Electric - Connectivity Solutions – Joe Benedetto –July , 2010
29
System Architecture
Bus / Daisy Chain Network Architecture
● A Bus network architecture utilizes a series of Ethernet switches
connected to devices for networks that do not require redundancy.
● A Daisy chain network architecture uses Schneider devices with
embedded dual port Ethernet switches such as the Advantys STB
Ethernet NIMs
Schneider Electric - Connectivity Solutions – Joe Benedetto –July , 2010
30
System Architecture
Redundancy - Single Ring Architecture
● When a cable break is detected in a single ring network,, the network
recovers by automatically rerouting traffic
Schneider Electric - Connectivity Solutions – Joe Benedetto –July , 2010
31
System Architecture
Redundancy - Dual Ring Architecture using Extended Switches
● Dual rings with main ring and sub rings connected by dual switches
provide redundant connections between rings

32
System Architecture
Redundancy – Mesh Architecture
● A mesh network architecture is an optional redundant topology for
networks with switches/devices that support the RSTP protocol.
● A mesh is more robust than a ring architecture for redundancy because
it offers more physical paths to a device
