LCSC06 Biosciences for Speech
and Language Therapy
Structure of the Module
• Timetabled for one 3 hour session per week…
• Over 2 semesters
• You should aim to spend at least an equivalent time studying
on your own (directed study v self-directed study), especially
if new to biosciences
• ALL information re the modules are on Learning Space,
including LCSC06
• Please read them!
• Information regarding: learning outcomes, assessment info,
books, reading (direct link to library reading lists) and all other
resources
Your teaching staff:
• Emily Burtenshaw (module leader). All
enquiries about module, email
[email protected]
• Marianne Bos-Clark
• Flora Hall
• Adam Beckman, Head of Audiology Services,
Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, Derriford
Hospital, Plymouth
Topics you will be studying: semester A
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Basic anatomical concepts
Basic anatomy & physiology of:
Muscles and nerves
The nervous system (CNS and PNS)
Head and neck
Eye and vision
Basic embryology and genetics
Semester B topics:
•
•
•
•
•
•
The larynx
Respiration
The cardiovascular system
Introduction to dysphagia
Audiology
The brain
What are the biosciences and
why do we need to study them?
Anatomy
• The study of the STRUCTURE OF AN
ORGANISM
• Familiarise yourself with the different
specialisms and areas of study in anatomy see page 2 in Seikel et al (2010)
Physiology
• The study of the FUNCTION of a living
organism and its parts
• Underpinning knowledge:
• An understanding of the chemical processes
occurring in the body
In practice…..
Anatomy
Physiology
Bioscience underpins many other modules you will study
LCSC03H Child development
LCSD08H Voice and Fluency
LCSD03 Motor Speech and swallowing
LCSD02 Developmental disorders
LCSH04H Advanced Dysphagia
LCSH02 Developmental disorders 2
LCSH03 Acquired language disorders
LCSH07 Cognitive communication disorders
PLACEMENT
• Communication is a complex
process, involving many of the
SYSTEMS of the body.
Anatomical systems work in an
integrated fashion in communication
• www.talkingpoint.org.uk
THE SPEECH CHAIN
http://www.rle.mit.edu/smcg/perkell_people.htm
Anatomical systems
of the human body
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
The musculoskeletal system
The respiratory system
The cardiovascular system
The brain and the nervous system
The phonatory system
The articulatory system
The resonatory system
The digestive system
The auditory system
Other body systems:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Endocrine
Lymphatic
Genito-urinary
Immune
Integumentary
We will need to refer to these from time to
time, but will not study them in detail
ICF framework
• International Classification of Functioning,
Disability and Health (WHO, 2001)
www.unescap.org
Small group activity
• Think of someone you have met on your visits on
in your personal life, who has had a condition
that has affected their communication.
• Consider the ICF framework for this person –how
has this condition affected them across the
domains of the ICF?
• How might a knowledge of the medical aspects
inform our understanding of the person and their
communication disorder?
From the point of view of communication,
we study the biosciences in order to:
• Understand the conditions that our clients
present with, from a biological and therefore
MEDICAL point of view
• Understand the underpinning PATHOLOGY
• and how this impacts on COMMUNICATION
• Aids our DIAGNOSIS, informs PROGNOSIS
• Help us to understand how MEDICATION
works and impacts on the client’s condition
Other reasons for studying the
biosciences
• Easy access to information means that clients can
be very knowledgeable about their own
conditions
• SLTs can work within a medical framework (as
opposed to an educational framework)
• SLTs work in multi-professional teams and hence
with a large number of other health
professionals: a shared understanding of the
biosciences and medical aspects enhances this
team working
Expectations and studying at
University
• You read to get a degree
• The lectures set the scene and the scope,
provide framework for this further reading
• Use the lectures as an opportunity to ask
questions
• If you think of a question after the lecture, use
the discussion board on LS
Reading…
• Is set out in the Reading and Resources section
on LS
• It is worthwhile buying at least ONE textbook for
each of your modules.
• Many resources are available on-line and there
are Apps available to help with your studies
• Don’t keep any useful resources to yourselves!
PLEASE share with your tutors and your fellow
students –post on LS
Resources:
• In addition to the recommended texts:
• Anatomy/physiology colouring books
• CD-roms (some of the texts include one, there
are a number you can borrow from the library)
• Websites (look for …ac.uk/..edu.*);
WIKIPEDIA can be useful, but you have been
warned! You Tube is an especially good source
of tutorials
• Apps
Learning Outcomes for LCSC06:As
outcomes of this module students should:
1.
Demonstrate an understanding of the
anatomical structures relevant to speech
2.
Demonstrate an understanding of the physical
and physiological processes which underpin the
function and control of the body systems most
closely associated with speech and language
therapy.
3.
Apply a knowledge and understanding of the
underlying biophysical sciences to selected
examples of speech, language and hearing
disorders.
ASSESSMENT for LCSC06
• ONE exam, in two parts
• Two x 2 hour exams, one per
semester
• Each comprises 50% of the module
• In Exam weeks, scheduled by
Registry
• Results posted on LS by Registry
What to do next…
• Read the information about LCSC06 on Learning
Space
• Browse the library bioscience resources – use link on
LS
• Check out any e-resources
• READ and make notes on:
• Chapter 1 in Seikel et al (2010) & answer the study
questions at the end of the Chapter page 29
• Chapter 1 & 2 in Atkinson & McHanwell (2002) page
28 onwards (NB scanned Chapter 2 available on LS)
Sample exam questions from today’s
session:
• 1) What is meant by an anatomical ‘system’?
• 2) Name four systems that are especially
relevant for the study of biosciences for the
profession of speech and language therapy
• 3) Give 5 reasons why the study of bioscience
is of importance to SLT
