Passage into Puberty
• What’s happening inside me?
– I’m suddenly growing taller
– My voice keeps cracking – it’s SO
embarrassing
– I’m going to need to wear a bra soon
– I’m getting hairy and hairier, and stinky
too
HORMONES ARE HAPPENING!
• Hormones trigger the start of a new phase in
your life called “puberty”
• Here’s what happens behind the scenes:
– The pituitary and hypothalamus glands in the
brain begin to send out new hormones into your
body
– In girls, the ovaries increase production of
estrogen
– In boys, the testicles increase production of
testosterone
GLANDS WORK OVERTIME
• Sweat glands become more active and
now produce an odor
• Oil glands become more active and
acne may appear
Physical Changes
• Hormones help determine your body build:
– Tall, short, thin, heavy…
• The hormone changes in your body cause
these physical changes to occur:
–
–
–
–
–
Growth spurt
More perspiration
Body odor
Oily skin
Pimples (zits)
Physical Changes: girls

notice:

pubic area

face, and in the pubic area

Emotional Changes
• The hormone changes in your body
cause these emotional changes to
occur in both boys and girls:
– You become more moody and emotional
– You become more self-conscious,
sensitive, and concerned over your
appearance and everything about yourself
Social Changes
• As a result of the physical and
emotional changes in your body, both
girls and boys may notice these social
changes:
– You make comparisons between yourself
and your peers
– You withdraw from your family, have more
conflicts with them
– You want to spend more time with your
friends and care more about their opinions
