Treaties of Velasco
The Treaties of Velasco
• The Battle of San Jacinto was over, but Texas
had not yet won their independence.
– A treaty had to be signed.
– In exchange for his life, Santa Anna agreed to have
all Mexican troops leave Texas. He was then
brought to Velasco. There, he signed 2 treaties.
One was public, the other was a secret.
• 1st Treaty of Velasco
– The war between Texas and Mexico was officially
ended, and Texas was declared independent.
– Santa Anna would not take up arms against Texas.
– All Mexican forces would withdraw beyond the
Rio Grande.
– Prisoners would be exchanged.
– The Mexicans would return all captured property.
– Texan leaders would promptly return Santa Anna
to Mexico.
• 2nd Treaty of Velasco (secret)
– Provided for Santa Anna’s immediate release. In
exchange, he would “try” to pursuade Mexican
leaders to recognize Texan independence.
– Santa Anna would also push for Mexican
recognition of the Rio Grande as Mexico’s border
with Texas.
• Things did not go as planned, however.
