• Porcine Circovirus was a huge failure
• PEDV has been much more of a success story in Canada
Where are we going?
• PEDV is forcing a number of key stakeholders to work in a
more coordinated way on health management.
• We are much better at this than in the past.
• Still much work to do in communication and developing trust
between stakeholders
• Avoiding “Turf protection” can be a problem.
What will help implement the
OAHN in your industry?
• Continue to expand upon the Raizo model
• Support the Veterinary Network of Practitioners and
Specialists
• Develop a simple electronic methodology for reporting
significant swine health events.
• Eg Exceptionally high mortality – High Path PRRS
• Eg Exceptionally severe disease – Porcine Circovirus
• Eg. Zoonotic interaction – Influenza A
• Improved communication eg Ontario Swine Health Plan
• Broader communication of health opportunities
• Eg. Porcine Circovirus vaccine management
• Cold chain management, Dosage, Administration
