NUI Galway: Non Violent Resistance Programme

Developed initially in Israel, the Non Violent Resistance Programme (Omer 2004; Weinblatt & Omer 2008) is a short-term evidenced based programme for parents/ carers involving 5-10 individual sessions and telephone support.

Parents/carers are the focus of both psycho-educational and therapeutic support.

The key components include parental commitment to non violent resistance, the development of non escalation and resistance skills, the recruitment of a support network for parents and an increase in parental presence and authority in children’s lives.

NUI Galway has developed a 2 day training programme for practitioners working with children and families where child to parent violence takes place, aimed at raising awareness, increasing practitioner confidence and skills in exploring this kind of violence with parents/ carers and increasing parents skill in responding to child to parent violence.

England

Break for Change (B4C) Brighton & Hove Council has been working in partnership with the Community & Voluntary Sector since 2008 developing an intervention programme that addresses Child to Parent Abuse:

 10 week programme  Parallel groups – young peoples and parents/carers  Underpinning knowledge of what constitutes violence and abusive behaviours (including domestic and sexual violence)  Creative & film conversational elements

For both

 Parent/carers whose adolescent sons or daughters act in violent and abusive ways, and the children themselves.

The programme aims to:

 Address the young person ’ s abusive/violent behaviour, reducing the instances of abuse and violence and develop more effective relationships between parent/carer and young person.

England

Brighton & Hove City Council together with a multi-disciplinary group of partners will:  Develop RCPV training programmes integrating both the B&H Break4Change programme & NUI Galway Non Violent Resistance Programme to share knowledge  Develop with the other partners, young people and parents a training DVD and toolkit  Support the integration of therapeutic and creative elements of programmes into the other countries where relevant This builds on the foundations that were laid when local practitioners in B&H saw the need for Break4Change
