MAP Assessments
MAP is a computerized test that measures
successes, areas of concern, and growth in the
subjects of Reading and Math.
Students take this assessment at the beginning,
middle, and end of the school year.
MAP Scores
MAP Student Growth Reports will be sent
home with first quarter report cards.
End-of-Year Benchmark for Reading is 189.6.
End-of-Year Benchmark for Math is 191.3.
ELA Curriculum
Our ELA (English-Language Arts) Standards are
also assessed with an iPad using a program
called mClass. This is a statewide initiative.
Your child has been assessed on Nonsense
Word Fluency, Dibels Oral Reading Fluency,
and Text Reading Comprehension.
Nonsense Word Fluency
kib dez jip mip sog mez
Children need to read 15 words and 54 sounds
in one minute to pass this benchmark, which
helps assess basic phonics skills.
Dibels Oral Reading Fluency
Students are required to read as much as they
can of 3 separate passages in one minute
each. They need to read at least 52 words
with 90% accuracy to meet this benchmark.
They are asked to retell as much as they can
at the end of each passage.
Text Reading Comprehension
Using leveled text, students are individually
assessed on their accuracy and comprehension.
Johnston County mandates that 2nd graders
pass a Level K text at the beginning of the
year, Level M by the middle of the year, and
Level O by the end of the year.

mCLASS Question Stems
Within our Reading block at school we are
modeling how to answer these types of
questions based on our Reading text. The
more practice and exposure they receive, the
more proficient they will become with these
types of questions.
Reading Response Log Homework
Our new reading response log will begin the
week of November 3rd. It will include
question stems that mirror those used in
mCLASS assessments.
Parent support is imperative at this time. We
are assigning 2 questions of your choice every
week to be checked on Fridays.
