Accelerated Remediation Bruce Vandal, Education Commission of the States September 21, 2011 Most Fail to “Get Past Go” Progress on Remedial Sequence of ATD Students After 1 Academic Year 15% Completed Sequence 46% Partially Completed Sequence 40% *Data rounded to nearest percent Did Not Begin Sequence Clery, ATD Data Notes, 2008 The Goal: Move students as quickly and effectively through their first college level course. The Remedial Education Sequence Assessment Placement Enrollment Completion Traditional Remedial Sequence Assessment • Take single standardized exam Placement • Cut score determines placement in one or more levels of remedial education Enrollment • Students take 1 or more courses consecutively before enrolling in gateway courses Completion • Success is defined as completion of remedial course Accelerated Remedial Sequence Assessment • Use of multiple tools to include HS curriculum, HS GPA and diagnostic academic assessment Placement • Placement is based on student motivation and precise diagnosis of deficiencies • Range of cut scores, rather than a precise cut score enables flexibility Enrollment • Co-Enrollment in Remedial and CollegeLevel Course • Offer single semester remedial option for students in need of more intense academic preparation Completion • Success is defined as completion of gateway course Reading and Writing • Reading is key barrier for those assessed at the lowest levels of remediation – equates with placement in both math and writing as well. • Writing is not the barrier that math is – fewer levels for students to navigate is one reason. • Combining reading and writing reduces time in remediation. • Co-Requisite approach creates college students, not remedial students. Final Word • Key Metric: Success in Gateway Course • Time, Not Student Learning is the Greatest Barrier to Success • Use Evidenced Based Practice • Continuous Improvement is essential to long term success For More Information Bruce Vandal [email protected] http://GettingPastGo.org
