What is Science?

Scientific Theory must: • Explain observation simply and clearly.

• Experiments must illustrate the theory and be repeatable.

• Be able to predict from the theory.

Make-up of Scientific Law • Laws just summarize observations about nature or a natural event. • Laws do not explain how or why something happens.

What is an experiment?

• the act of conducting a controlled test or investigation • the testing of an idea; "it was an experiment in living"; "not all experimentation is done in laboratories" • to conduct a test or investigation; "We are experimenting with the new drug in order to fight this disease" • a venture at something new or different; "as an experiment he decided to grow a beard"

What is a control?

• control condition: a standard against which other conditions can be compared in a scientific experiment; "the control condition was inappropriate for the conclusions he wished to draw" • determining all factors that can affect the outcome of an experiment, and setting all those factors the same except for the

one factor

that is varied.

THEORIES - Explain

In Science, a Hypothesis is the explanation for the events that have been observed. Scientists create hypotheses to try and explain the observed behavior of the world. They do so by creating an explanation that can be tested (an hypothesis). If a lot of evidence (data) is collected to support the hypothesis, then scientists accept the hypothesis as a good explanation, and it may, given even more testing, become an accepted theory.
