What is the Places Database?
•
Common repository for all place-related data and information in CLG at a range
of geographic levels
LAs, Local Areas, Regions, Cities, Towns, Neighbourhoods, and Policy-related areas (e.g. Pathfinders)
•
Simple tailored screens for multiple audiences and uses
Strategic briefing for Ministerial visits e.g. to Buncefield
Policy-specific reports and screens e.g. for monitoring Local Area Agreements or Thames Gateway areas
Analytical capability in support of DCLG staff e.g. for CSR preparation
Statistics download centre for analysts
•
A scalable framework to be flexible and responsive to new or changing
Departmental priorities (DSOs) and to allow efficiencies to be realised via
consolidation and convergence of the Department’s other data systems.

How will the data be maintained?
•
Regular uploads from existing data sources using automated tools
•
Administrator role to provide quality assurance of upload process
•
Data custodians retain responsibility for overall data quality
•
Data exchange standards and protocols are being established with suppliers
•
Connectivity Pilots have established initial ‘live links’ with Neighbourhood
Statistics, Maps-on-Tap and the Data and Statistics Catalogue databases
•
Future work will build on this ‘connected model’, providing live access to the
Audit Commission Area Profiles

Where can we go from here?
•
Update existing data and add new datasets e.g. housing data to support
national performance indicators:
Number of net additional homes provided
Number of affordable homes delivered
Supply of ready to develop housing sites
Number of households in temporary accommodation
•
Add new functionality following feedback from GO roadshows and users
Search facility
Better charting facilities using ChartFX
Improved mapping with Maps on Tap
Presentational changes
More data taken directly from source systems
