Objectives
1. Teachers will become familiar with the course
expectations and project requirements.
2. Teachers will become familiar with the NBPTS
portfolio process and assessment center
exercises through an on-line scavenger hunt
using the NBPTS.org website.
3. Teachers will become familiar with the 5 Core
Propositions of the NBPTS.

Activity 1
Introduction to the course syllabus,
expectations, and project requirements
Activity 2
Think-Pair-Share:
1. Complete the K (What I know) of the
NBPTS K-W-L chart independently.
2. Share responses for “K” in groups.
3. Share responses for “K” with the class.
4. Complete W (What I want to know) of the
NBPTS K-W-L chart independently.
5. Share responses for “W” with the class.
Activity 3
NBPTS Scavenger Hunt in the computer lab
1. Briefly review the questions to be
researched.
2. Go to the lab and work independently for
one hour to answer the questions.
3. Discuss the responses to the questions
in small groups or pairs.
4. Share responses in a large group
discussion.

What Teachers Need to Know and Do
Think-Pair-Share:
1. Review the 5 Core Propositions on the
Accomplished Teachers poster and reflect on
their implications regarding the professional
educator.
2. In groups, define and articulate your
interpretation of each proposition. What key
words (adjectives/verbs) come to mind?
Activity 5
Assignments for November 28th
1. Using the NBPTS.org website, browse
the area of certification you are most
interested in. When you are sure of the
area you want to focus on, you will need to
download and save the ’06-’07 pdf files for
the following: Portfolio Instructions and
Standards
2. Check on your district’s policy for
obtaining permission to videotape. Get
the district’s form if there is one. If not,
compose a videotaping permission form
based on the sample provided in the
Portfolio Instructions for your certificate
area. Clear the form you produce with your
administrator. Give the form to your
students to have signed and returned to
you before November 28th.
3. In the Portfolio Instructions for your
certificate area, scroll through the
bookmarks until you get to “Video
Recording Overview”. Read through the
entire section on video recording through
the section “Video Recording Technical
Matters”. Start thinking about the
implications of what you read for
videotaping in your classroom. Pay
particular attention to the following
sections: Video recording your class,
Video recording practical matters, Video
recording technical matters.
4. Read Propositions #1 and #2 in What
Teachers Should Know and Be Able to Do,
highlight key phrases, and compose a
written reflection based on your responses
to the questions on Journal Entry Prompt
