Transcript Meade Succeeds An Accuplacer Testing Collaboration Between


Students do not understand the purpose of the test.

Students do not understand the difference between
entrance exams vs. placement exams.

Students do not take the test seriously.

School system needed help in preparing students for
the exam which included student “buy-in”.

The purpose of ACCUPLACER tests is to provide students with useful
information about their academic skills in math, English, and reading. The
results of the assessment, in conjunction with students’ academic
background, goals, and interests, are used by academic advisors and
counselors to help determine course selection.

Students cannot "pass" or "fail" the placement tests, but it is very
important that they realize they must take these tests seriously so they
have an accurate measure of their academic skills.


To understand what ACCUPLACER is and how it can
help support their educational goals.

To support schools system in preparing students.

To provide information regarding the ramifications of
not being preparing.

To provide supports/information for preparation.
ACCUPLACER = Placement


Placement is determined based
on the skills demonstrated
during the exam.
Placement will determine where
students start in their college
coursework.
SAT = Entrance

Colleges can require students to
receive “x” score before they are
accepted as a student at the
college.
1. What are Developmental Classes?
2. How much do they cost?
3. Do they count toward graduation?
4. Do they have to take them?
5. How many developmental classes are there?

Depending on the score earned, requirements can
include completing Developmental/Non-Credit
coursework.

This occurs because the skills demonstrated during
the test do not match the skills required to achieve
academic success in a credit level course.

Developmental coursework is provided in order to
“develop skills needed” which makes, what many
institutions refer to as, “College Ready.”

Classes required based on SAT or placement scores.

They DO NOT count toward college graduation.

They are required to take and pass ,because in most instances they are
pre-requisites or co-requisites of credit classes.

These courses cost the same as other classes.


AACC (Public In-State 2 year)
 In-County $103 * 3 = $309
University of Maryland (Public In-State 4 year)
 In-state $290 * 3 = $870


( per credit coast * number of credits)
Out of State $1014 * 3 = $3,042
Dartmouth
 No longer provide a per credit cost = $42,996 per semester (Private Outof-State 4 year)
NOTE- COST CALCULATED ON A 3 CREDIT PER CLASS AVERAGE. Costs do not include fees
For every three credit class, students can expect the
following time commitments:
IN-CLASS TIME
 15 weeks
 45 hours of class time in those 15 weeks
HOMEWORK TIME
 3 hours per credit
 9 hours per week
 135 hours per semester PER CLASS!
Remember….this is for a class that does not count toward college graduation
that can be taken in high school for FREE!

Although the goal is to reduce the number of
Development/Noncredit classes students have to take,
the reality is:
◦ 40% of college freshmen have to take a non-credit
English/reading class,
◦ 70% of college freshmen have to take a non-credit math
class.

There are three sections: Reading, English and Math. Within those three
sections your skills will be assessed in the following areas:


It is UNTIMED so do not rush!

It is a Computer Adaptive Test. This means that the questions are chosen on the basis
of the answer provided from the previous question. This technique selects the right
questions based on the ability level demonstrated. Because the test works this way,
every question must be answered.

It is possibility that only one math test is taken. This is determined by the computer,
based on the skills displayed during the first math test.

The following slides outline placement options.

Regarding Reading/ English Placement- It is important to
know that the reading and sentence skill sections of the
exam work together to provide English Placement.
Depending on the combination of these two tests,
potential developmental coursework requirements may
vary.
The next three screens provide credit/non-credit options
based on the three sections of the placement test.
Developmental/Non-Credit Classes are red and Credit Level
Classes are green.

Once the test is completed, a score report will be
created.

Staff from the college will explain/interpret the scores
and provide any possible options along with
answering questions.

Take this opportunity SERIOUSELY. Retesting is LIMITED!

The reading and sentence skills sections of the ACCUPLACER may be
taken again…..ONCE. You may come to any of the three testing center
locations during our regular hours to retest.

Retest in math is not an option without taking the tutorial recommended
based on your score. Additional information on this will be provided as
test scores are reviewed with individual students.

Relax! ACCUPLACER was designed to help you succeed in college. Your
score helps you and your advisor determine which courses are most
appropriate for your current level of knowledge and skills.

You will be able to concentrate better on the test if you get plenty of rest
and eat properly prior to the test. You should also use the restroom and
gather your thoughts before the test begins.

Pay careful attention to directions, and be sure you understand the
directions before you begin each test.

Understand that this is an adaptive test. Questions are chosen based on
the answers to previous questions. Because the test works this way, every
question must be answered; answers can not be changed once
submitted.

If you do not know the answer to a question, try to eliminate one or more
of the choices.


Students in high school have little understanding
about what developmental classes are and how they
can effect their long term plans.

Students gained greater understanding of how they
can use ACCUPLACER along with SAT/ACT’s in
meeting their college entrance goals.

High school staff gained additional information which
assists them in counseling students.

Look into making a video link with this information on our
testing center site.

Research grant possibilities for purchasing ipads, for
students to use on campus and in the high schools, for
students to try.

Evaluate how we currently provide information when
counseling students to ensure it is consistent.

Review Assessment Procedures and what we can do to
collect effectiveness data.
