Growing and ageing population




According to the 2011 census the population of the Western
Trust area was 294,417
38,613 of these were older people aged 65+ (4,211of these
were aged over 85 years)
The population is expected to grow with an average annual
growth rate of 0.57%
The largest annual growth increase (5.1%) is in the 85+
Increased prevalence of long term
conditions



Hypertension, diabetes, obesity, asthma, mental health
problems and dementia
Number of cases of dementia in NI could rise from
19,000 in 2011 to 60,000 by 2051.
In the Western Trust in 2012 there were 2717 people
estimated to have dementia.
