1. The purpose of the Meyrin Filters
Purpose of the Meyrin Filters
(incl. Thyristor Controlled Reactors):
-
Reactive Power compensation for the entire Meyrin network
-
Harmonic Filtering for the entire Meyrin network
-
Voltage stabilization 18 kV for Booster pulses
Booster cannot operate without the Meyrin Filters / TCR Booster.
2. Technical Design
3. Technical State
What has been done in 2007 ?
- complete maintenance program (40 kCHF)
- opening and verification of all components
- cleaning of insulators
- test of protection
- Replacement of HV insulating bushings
in 2005-2007 (180 kCHF)
3. Technical State
Reactors (1971):
- good state
- Insulation seems OK
HV insulating bushings:
- new (2005 and 2007)
3. Technical State
Capacitors (1990):
- good state
- only 1 unit had
slightly reduced capacit.,
still within tolerance
3. Technical State
Resistors (1971):
- good state
- found traces of
external flash-over
on one unit. Linked to
Roof leakage 2006?
- Roof repaired 2006
3. Technical State:
Thyristor Controlled Reactors (1997)
- good state
- annual maintenance
done by supplier 2007
- no spare reactors
(4 months delay)
3. Technical State: General estimations
Average life times of HV components
(my general estimation):
Meyrin
Filters
- major HV components: 35 - 45 years
(transformers, cables, breakers, reactors, resistors)
36 years
- AC capacitors: 15 - 20 years
(depending on rating and network conditions !)
17 years
- Protection relays and controls: 15 - 30 years
12 years
- mechanical, moving parts: 15 years
(cooling pumps of Thyr. Controll. Reactor)
10 years
3. Technical State: Spare parts
Spare parts in stock:
-
Protection relays
Capacitors
Coils, resistors
Surge arresters
OK
insufficient stock
no stock
to be replaced (36 years old)
-
TCR coils
TCR electronics
no stock
insufficient stock
Delay in case of breakdown without spare parts in stock:
4 months
Delay in case of breakdown with spare parts in stock:
5 days
4. Conclusions
1. Good technical state, no major problems found.
2. However, components are approaching the end of life time.
3. Renovation not necessary for the time being. Future Renovation
shall be seen in the context of new machines in Meyrin.
4. We are not prepared for major component breakdowns.
Additional spare parts required:
(150 kCHF Meyrin Filters, 65 kCHF for TCR Booster)
