Reasons for Work
• Main 275,000 Volt cables in Edinburgh need to be replaced
• Cable runs from Loanhead to new substation at Dewar Place
• Work is essential to secure the future security of supplies for
the Edinburgh area

Removal of 10m section of rock – drilling and bursting method
Probing of the route length and identification of further bands of harder rock
Modification of Tunnel Boring Machine to prepare for further hard sections
Progress in recent weeks from 20m to 85m progress

Prysmian –Installation of Cables
• Will arrive on site directly after Donegans are completed
• Preparation works to be carried out before cable installed
• Jointing bays in Gardners Crescent and Lower Gilmour Place to be excavated
• Support scaffolding and Steelwork to be installed in tunnel
• Cables installed
• Jointing of 275,000 volt cables
• Reinstatement of Jointing Bays and removal of scaffolding/steelwork from the
tunnel
• Installation of Tunnel cover
• Garden reinstatement to commence

• Due to delays with tunnel, completion date will now be the
latter part of 2009 (Nov- Dec)
• Further update meeting will be arranged for
September/October 2009

Gardner’s Crescent Reinstatement
• 1st window clean has been carried out (2nd clean will be
carried out after work is completed)
• Trees which have been removed will be replaced with mature
trees (removed 3 trees and replacing with 6 trees)
• New path will be created with stones in keeping with
Edinburgh environment
• Grass and Shrubs will be renewed
• The wall at each end of the gardens will be reconstructed by
skilled craftsmen
