Passwords and More Passwords
Passwords should contain only letters and digits, NO
spaces, punctuation, or special characters.
They should have at least one letter and at least one
digit, and should be at least 6 characters long.
They should be difficult to guess, but easy to
remember.
A good password protects your privacy, your
information, and your stored files.
Always log out before you leave.
You can always change it
Computer logon (LAN account) password is assigned
when you get your account.
Must be at least 6 characters long
Student e-mail password is whatever password you
provide when you get it.
WebAdvisor password is whatever “new password” you
provide after your first logon.
Must be 6-9 characters long, letters and digits.
You can provide a password hint.
Ordinarily, your username cannot be changed. It is the
identifier the system uses for you.
Other Passwords at FLCC
WebCt password to use course
materials in a WebCt class.
SLN password for an online course from
SUNY Learning Network.
SAM or MyItLab password for course
materials from Course Technology texts
(or others).
etc. etc. --- Ask in B388 for help.
Computing at Home
We use only Microsoft Word. If you use Ms
Works, or Word Perfect, or anything else, you
must save your file at home to a Word
compatible format (.rtf file) if you want to
open it here.
If your class uses specific software, you can
save a lot of money by working here, instead of
buying the software for your home computer.
Transporting Data
Try to avoid using diskettes.
Store files on your U: drive for safety.
Copy to a USB drive for file transport, or
to a CD to archive many files.
You can “transport” a file by e-mailing it
to yourself, but be sure to empty your
inbox, sent items, and trash often.
Never keep your only copy of anything
important on removable media.
Wireless Access
For internet browsing using your own wireless
laptop.
Read your e-mail
Do research on the World Wide Web
Use web-based course materials
You must provide your username and password
before you can reach a website.
See the Help Sheet about Wireless Access for
current information about wireless access
points on campus.
