How to use File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
to share files over 10MB
Created by Rosemary Browne, Information Resource Coordinator
Information Technology Services, Coastal Carolina University

First, select and
copy the file that
you want to share.
Red Flag: The file
name cannot contain
spaces. If you need
to use spaces in the
name, put an
underscore between
the words.
Now open Computer
(Vista) or My
Computer (Windows
XP).
In the address bar,
highlight the
address…in this
case, Computer.
In that address bar,
type this:
[email protected]
then press enter.
This is the window
that will open,
Notice that the
address has
changed.
Double-click the
from_ccu folder to
open it.
Right click in the
blank space in the
open folder, and
select Paste from
the pop-up menu.
This puts a copy
of your file in the
from_ccu folder.
You can’t delete it
once it’s pasted in
the folder.
Now, Click in the
address bar to
highlight the
address, and press
CTRL+C to copy the
address.
Create an email to the
person you need to
share the file with.
Instruct the recipient to
click the link to access
the file. Press CTRL+V
to paste the first part
of the address into the
email.
At the end of the
address, place your
cursor immediately to
the right of the last
forward slash (/) and
type the name of your
document. Press enter
at the end of the
document name so it
becomes a part of the
link.
Case matters! Be sure
you use upper and
lower case identical to
your document’s name.
Again, no spaces are
allowed.
Send the email. It’s a
good idea to copy
yourself on it so you
can test whether you
did it correctly!
When the email arrives,
open it and click on the
link.
You’ll be given the
choice to Open, Save,
or Cancel. It’s generally
safer to save the
document, then open it
from the saved
location.

No spaces in file names.
Complete the ftp address in the email using the
EXACT title of the document. Case matters.
You will find that using simpler names makes for
simpler sharing.
Once you paste your file into the from_ccu folder,
you cannot retrieve it. If you put the wrong one in,
no worries…just don’t share it with anyone and no
one will ever know!
