Yearbook Vocabulary
LEARN THESE WORDS.
Page Vocabulary
 Double Page Spread (DPS)
Two facing pages in a yearbook that are designed to
appear as one cohesive design.
 Body Copy
 The main story of the newsletter is the body copy or text.
 Dominant Element
 The largest element on your spread, usually an
interesting photo/headline combination.

Page Vocabulary
 Primary Headline
The largest type on your page. Works with the dominant photo to
draw attention and create interest.
Secondary Headline
 Used to make a blend between headline and story, usually very
enticing to readers.
Caption
 Text near a photo that tells about the photo and the people pictured.
Gutter
 The two pica space between the left and right page on a double page
spread.
Folio
 Information that helps the reader know their location in the book,
like page number, chapter data, etc.





Measurement Vocabulary
 Pica: Graphical measurement equaling 1/6 of an
inch.
 Point: The basic measurement system used to
measure the size of type. There are 12 points in one
pica, and 72 points to an inch. This sentence is 14
point type.
Type Vocabulary
 Typeface: A collection of all the characters of a




single type design (e.g., Helvetica or Times Roman).
Font Family: All of the variations in a typeface, like
Arial Bold, Arial italic, Arial Compressed, etc.
Type Style: Modification of typefaces to add
emphasis or contrast (e.g., bold or italic, reversed,
overlined, etc).
Serif: A typeface with prickly lines on the ends of
letter strokes extending from the ends of the letters.
Sans-serif: A typeface that is straight-edged.
Image Vocabulary
 Resolution: The amount of pixels or graphical data




crammed into the body of your image.
DPI: A way to measure resolution, means dots per
inch, same pixels per inch.
Pixel: The smallest discrete element of an image or
picture (usually a singlecolored dot); "the greater the
number of pixels per inch the greater the resolution.”
jpg: type of photo file; file extension
indd: file extension for InDesign files
