Determining Importance
• Opening Activity: Take a minute to think of
3 statements about yourself, two of them
are true and one of them is a lie.
• Then share these statements with a
partner and see if each of you can point
out the truth statements from the lie.

During Reading
Strategies you should use during reading include:
Assess and revise predictions.
My first prediction is correct since the article is basically all
about summer jobs.
My second prediction is also correct as about halfway through the
article it explains how to network to find a job.
My third prediction is incorrect. The article does not tell me where I
can find a summer job locally.
Connections to Text
Make a link to what I know about the topic
(Text to Text, Text to Self, Text to World)
Three connections to text I have are:
1. I have read articles about summer jobs.
Text to Text
2. I have had summer jobs.
Text to Self
3. I have applied for summer jobs.
Text to World
During Reading: Questioning
Ask myself questions. 5W’s and How
All about professional image.
Who needs a professional image?
What is a professional image?
When do I need to have a professional image?
Where do I need to have a professional image?
Why do I need to have a professional image?
How can I have a professional image?
Fix Up Strategy
Re-read
Re-read a section.
“Dressing for the interview.” Why?
Because there is a lot of information to
understand.
Fix Up Strategy
Read Ahead
Go ahead and read and see if it makes
sense. “Visual resume” We could jump to
create a resume, but when we do we
realize that it doesn’t make sense, it’s a
different type of resume. Better to go back
and read entire section on image first.
After Reading Strategies
There are a number of strategies after
reading that can help you make meaning
of what you have just read.
Some of these include:
Summarizing the main points,
Making up Questions, and
Asking yourself is the title appropriate.
Summarizing
To summarize it is a good idea to use a
graphic organizer to aid comprehension.
An example of a completed organizer for
the article Landing the Ideal Summer Job
would look as follows.
Explain my choices for completing the
organizer.
Skip trendy stuff, Appearance,
Behavior, Communication,
Good eye contact,
Firm handshake
Create a
professional
image
Practice
Interview Skills
Practice Questions with
friends or family. Know why
you want to work there. Ask
Smart questions
Landing a
Summer Job
Create a Resume
Be accurate, organized, and
Interesting. Spelling and
Grammar. Extra-curricular.
Network
Meet people who can help,
Job-shadow, Volunteer, or
Intern
Making Questions
To see if you understand the main ideas
you could make up questions and ask
someone else to answer them. Two
questions we could make up about this
article are:
1. What is a professional image?
2. Why should people network?
Appropriate Title
Ask yourself this question. Is the title for
this article appropriate?
In this case the article is focused on
summer jobs and what you need to do to
find a great summer job, so we can
conclude that it would be an appropriate
title for this article.
