-Born October 20, 1859 in Burlington, Vermont to Archibald Dewey & Lucina Artemisia Rich -Married Harriet Alice Chipman in 1886 -They had 6 children together and adopted 1 _Married Roberta Lowitz Grant in 1946 after Harriet passed away -Died June 1, 1952

Education

-Burlington public schools -University of Vermont (Phi Beta) * enrolled at age 15 & graduated second in his class -John Hopkins University (PhD) -University of Chicago

Teaching Career

-Taught at a seminary in Oil City, Pennsylvania -Taught at a private school in Vermont -Assistant professor at the University of Michigan -Professor of philosophy at the University of Minnesota -Head of the philosophy department at the University of Chicago Director of the University of Chicago’s School of Education

-President of the American Psychological Association and the American Philosophical Association (simultaneously) -Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University and Columbia Teachers College -Longtime member of the American Federation of Teachers
