IPE at UAB Rod Nowakowski, OD, PhD UAB School of Optometry/The Medical Center Birmingham, Alabama October, 2013 SACS QEP • QEP should improve an aspect of student learning and enhance the quality of education – Address a specific topic – Be developed & supported by the campus community – Have defined goals – Be evaluated for its effectiveness • “Learning in a Team Environment” Morphogenesis • Interprofessional Education • Clinical Simulation • Center for Interprofessional Simulation IPE at UAB IPE at UAB - Simulation Resources • The Office of Interprofessional Simulation for Innovative Clinical Practice works closely with the various simulation centers within the UAB system: – The UAB Hospital Center for Patient Safety and Advance Medical Simulation – Children's Hospital of Alabama Pediatric Simulation Center – UAB Learning Resources Center Skills & Simulation Lab IPE at UAB - Fundamentals Courses • Virtually all basic science courses in the curriculum are taught with optometry and dentistry together • This covers a range of fundamental disciplines, including: – Anatomy, Physiology – Biochemistry, Genetics, Immunology – Microbiology, Pathology and Pharmacology IPE at UAB - Systems Courses • And a series of Systems-based courses: – Neuroscience – Cardiovascular – Pulmonary – Renal – Musculoskeletal/Skin – Gastrointestinal – Hematology and Endocrine IPE at UAB • Consulting Physicians in the Ocular Disease and Low Vision Service • Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Model at M-Power Health Center • The Bell Center • Interprofessional externship sites • Interprofessional residency rotation sites IPE at UAB - Global Health Course • Offered a newly developed course to Professional Program students – It is an interdisciplinary, primarily online, course involving health professions (Medicine, Dentistry, Optometry, Nursing, Public Health etc) and some nonhealth professional schools (e.g. Engineering, Business, undergraduate). – Interprofessional Collaborations in Global Health IPE at UAB Rod Nowakowski, OD, PhD UAB School of Optometry/The Medical Center Birmingham, Alabama October, 2013
