A Great Expedition
Coronado’s Backstory
Coronado was born in Salamanca, Spain in
1510.
He was born a nobel man but his brother claimed
most of his family’s wealth.
On his expedition he was joined by 340
Spanish,300 Indian allies, and 1,000 slaves, both
native Americans and Africans.
Coronado came to America (sent by a Spanish
ruler) to seek glory and fortune.
Coronado led one of the best European
explorations of the North American interior.

Kansas.

What He Found
Coronado found Indian Publos.
He did not find any riches though.

Coronado was very angry that he didn’t
find any money.
He was so angry he had the Indians
strangled before he left.
Back To New Spain
Coronado was very angry when he
returned.
No one considered Coronado’s expedition a
success, except the missionaries who used
it to spread Christianity.

Coronado National Memorial
The Coronado Memorial
honors the first organized
exploration in the Southwest .
The memorial is located in a
natural area on the
international border on the
southeast side of the Huachuca
Mountains,south of Arizona.
The memorial confirms the ties
that connect the U.S. and
Mexico.
What Is Seen At The Memorial
Many different types
of butterflies are seen
around the memorial.
