Implementing the Common Core State
Standards
How do CCSS (Common Core State Standards)
impact my child’s education, and how can I
help with the transition?
What are the Common Core Standards?
• Developed as a collaborative
effort
• Common Core Standards were
adopted by 45 states
What are the benefits?
• Common standards ensure that all students, no
matter where they live, will be focused on graduating
high school and being prepared for post secondary
schools.
• Prepares students to succeed in a competitive work
force environment.
• Define what students should know and be able to do
at each grade level
How is it different?
•
•
•
•
•
•
More emphasis on use of knowledge
Less worksheets and more doing
All courses are impacted
Greater emphasis on real-world application
More open-ended questions
Problem solving that requires students to
evaluate and determine best
answers/solutions
The Shift
English Language Arts/Literacy
Mathematics
• Building knowledge through
content-rich nonfiction
• Reading, writing and speaking
grounded in evidence from
text, both literary and
informational
• Regular practice with complex
text and its academic
language
• Focus is narrowed in order to
maximize depth of learning
• Coherence: Think across
grades, and link to major
topics within grades
• Rigor: In major topics pursue
conceptual understanding,
procedural skill and fluency,
and application with equal
intensity
WHY make changes?
• Most of our knowledge base comes from
informational text
• 80% of required reading in college/workplace is
informational text
• It is more difficult to understand than narrative
• CCSS moves percentages to
– 50:50 at elementary level
– 75:25 at secondary level (includes ELA, science, social
studies)
WHY??
• Most college/workplace writing is evidencebased
• Large gap between college and high school
text complexity
• Students’ reading complexity levels are
predictors of success in college

How will it be assessed?
• Assessments will begin the 2014-2015 school
year
• Two groups of assessments will be formedSMARTER and PARCC
• No longer one high-stake assessment
• Will incorporate technology with computer based
testing
• All grade levels will be assessed
When will we see changes?
• Math curriculum through EnVision currently
correlates with the Common Core Standards
• Reading curriculum matches Illinois State
Standards and is being aligned with the Common
Core Standards
• Assessment changes will take place in 2014-2015
school year
• ISATs will be continued to be taken until Common
Core Assessments are created
How can I help??
• Look through the common core standards to get a feel for what
your child will be learning as he moves through school. Read the
English-language arts standards and the math standards at the
common core web site. (There is also an App for this…Common
Core Standards by Mastery Connect
• Encourage your child to research a topic he’s interested in using
informational texts and original documents.
• As you read with your child, ask her in-depth why and how
questions that encourage her to analyze and synthesize texts. For
example, read three different versions of the Goldilocks and the
Three Bears and ask your child to compare and contrast them as
you read.
• Examples of text are provided on the school website
How can I help??
• As your child works through his homework, ask him
how someone might use what he’s working on in “real
life.” Give examples of how you would use the
concepts your child is learning at school in your own
everyday life. (i.e. grocery shopping, work, paying bills)
• Ask your child to explain or show how they’re solving
problems. Then, have them think of multiple ways to
solve a math problem, or answer a reading discussion
question.
• As your child completes homework, help them hone in
on the most important aspects and core concepts.
How can I help??
• Understand your
child’s progress with
AIMsWeb
assessments and
what their lexiles
levels are.
