Standardised User Accounts for All Staff and Students Secure Internet Browsing and Email This year all students and staff will have to use a username and password to access any Internet site or email Username will be unique across NSW User logon and passwords Logon Models currently used in schools No Username / Automatic logon Generic Account(s) Year / Class account Machine Accounts Individual Logons Individual Accounts Eg. Doug.Hole, RBest, Advantages: Good security Accounts can have different access to folders/resources Users can not change other students work Able to identify user Disadvantages Setup requires more planning and management Password issues UserNames Initial+Lastname Pwee Duplicates common First.last Easy to extract from OASIS Can match Internet/email username. Creating usernames Local Creation SIBE Usernames / local password EDU.WIN Local Creation + Minimal time to create account + Wizard/tools available W2KWizard, Novell Wizard, XSUIM (mac), Passenger (Mac) - Username may not be same as SIBE username SIBE Usernames/Local Password Usernames: firstname.lastname, firstname.lastnameNN + Names can be extracted via EMU. + Above tools can then be used. + Current Group/security policies can be applied. + Normal network management applies. - No synchronisation between local and SIBE account password. EDU.WIN Students log on to local computer using Edu username and password. + Username and passwords are consistent between school network and DET portal. + New students are created overnight. + All teaching staff can reset student passwords. - Some configuration required. - Group policies (Win) can not be applied.
