Introduction
o Human Resource Management (HRM) means
• Effectively managing an organization’s employees, commonly known
as its human resources or human capital.
• Being the “voice of management” to employees
from a strategic viewpoint when setting policies and practices.

Career Paths in HRM
o There are two career paths in Human Resource
Management. These are:
• The Generalist and
• The Specialist
NOTE: 1) HRMs often progress to higher levels such as CEO.
2) Their career often depend upon the nature and
size of the organization.

The Generalist
o They have a broad spectrum of responsibilities.
Some of which are;
• staffing the organization,
• training and developing employees at all levels,
• managing a diverse workforce, and
• maintaining a fair and equitable compensation program.

The Specialist
oAre mainly hired by larger organizations.
oHave technical knowledge and skills in specific
areas of human resource management.

Job Outlook
o Employment of HRMs is projected to grow
13 percent from 2012 to 2022, about as fast
as the average for all occupations.
o Employment growth largely depends on the performance
and growth of individual companies. As new companies
form and organizations expand operations, they will need
more HRMs to oversee and administer their programs.

Job Prospects
• Although job opportunities are expected to vary
based on the staffing needs of individual companies,
strong competition can be expected for most positions.
• Job opportunities should be best in the management of
companies and enterprises industry as organizations continue
to use outside firms to assist with some of their HR functions.

• Candidates with certification or a master’s degree,
particularly those with a concentration in HRM,
should have the best job prospects.
• Those with a solid background in HR programs,
policies, and employment law should also have
better job opportunities.

Earnings and Salaries
o According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of
the U.S. Department of Labor, “the median
annual wage for human resources managers was
$99,720 in May 2012”.
o Salaries are drawn from the Society for Human Resource
Management (SHRM’s) Compensation Data Center.
o They, in collaboration with Watson Wyatt Data Services (a recognized
leader in global compensation surveys), monitors the SHRM HR
Compensation Data Center.
