)Obs( NCEP
)Sim( 2007 IPCC

The ability of models to reproduce the distribution of cyclone density was found to
be correlated with their spatial resolution, 0.8 for the number of vertical levels and
0.56 for the horizontal grid spacing.
correlation between standard error in cyclone distribution and the NSI was found
to be 0.32. In spite of its marginal significance, this suggests that the formation of
MCs might be suppressed under enhanced westerlies over Western Europe
The results of this study leads to several conclusions. The models reproduce quite well the
major climatic regional features but there are still several discrepancies. One is the
underestimation of the MCs density and other is the bias in the reproducing of the longterm mean pressure fields, both in the lower- and in the upper-levels. On the global scale,
they overestimate the amplitude of the global pressure belts. One manifestation of the
latter is a doubling of the south to north pressure gradient over Western Europe, which is
proposed here as a factor that contributes to the underestimation of the MCs density. The
models also miss the observed decreasing trend in the cyclonic activity over the
Mediterranean. Since it is not known yet whether this trend reflects natural variation or is
a part of global change, it cannot be stated what is the implied models' weakness.
The correlation found here between the degree of the underestimation of the MCs
population by the models and their resolution suggests that the refinement in the more
advanced climate model is promising for their ability to better simulate, and project, the
response of regional cyclogenesis in the Mediterranean.
The variety in the identity of the models found to be the best in each experiment means
that we cannot point at definite group of model as "the best of all". In the next stage of
our study, devoted to the future changes in the synoptic regime of the Mediterranean, the
differences among the models to reproduce the various regional synoptic factors will be
taken into account.
