Elementary Education Induction meeting April 1, 2014 151 Everitt Lab 6:00 p.m. Council on Teacher Education www.cote.illinois.edu What We Do • Monitor compliance with the Common Assessment Plan (CAP) – www.cote.illinois.edu/about/governance/policies/CAP_Undergraduate.pdf – – – – – – – – Criminal Background Check Annual Bloodborne Pathogen Training GPA (content, professional education, UI, and overall) (2.5) Grades in content/professional education (C or better) Safety Education Module Mandated Reporter Training/Acknowledgement Student Teaching Agreement Tests (Basic Skills, Content Test, APT, edTPA) What We Do (continued) • Answer Licensure Questions • Answer Endorsement Questions • Complete Final Audit for Licensure/Recommendation for licensure Endorsements • An endorsement is a statement appearing on a license that identifies the specific subjects (at various grade levels) that the license holder is authorized to teach • All will be endorsed in Elementary Education: Self-Contained General Education Endorsements (continued) • Requirements are listed in our website • Middle grade endorsements (grades 5-8) – Content specific (there is no “generic” middle grade endorsement) – Typically 18 hours in subject • Exceptions: Math/English as a Second Language/Bilingual – Recommend at least two – Bilingual/ESL (C&I/DEIL) – State needs: math, science, foreign language, ESL, bilingual Endorsements (continued) • All middle grade endorsements require Middle Grade Coursework • CI 410, EPS 427, EPSY 430 (if from this campus) • Online through UI (Summers) • Other institutions (link on CoTE website) • Most students take between junior/senior year • Can delay certification and take summer after graduation Endorsements (continued) • Social Science requirements met (If MG courses are taken) • Close in General Science (14-18) – Most physical and life science courses count • Close in Language Arts (13-20) – English, Journalism, Speech, Creative Writing, BTW – Courses outside of these areas should check with Council • Area of Concentration gives you a start • Can use Gen Ed courses if they apply Endorsements (continued) • Foreign language – – – – 5-8: 18 hours of coursework K-4: 24 hours of coursework and pass test 9th grade: 24 hours of coursework and pass test Recommend passing content test for any foreign language endorsement (for “Highly Qualified” Status) Testing • Had to use ACT, SAT, or pass Basic skills or TAP to be admitted. • No additional cert tests taken first year of program • Elementary/Middle Grade (110) – Must take/pass prior to student teaching (state law) • Assessment of Professional Teaching: Grades K-9 (or non grade specific version) – Generally taken during student teaching Things To Know • If you change your name, change it in Banner and notify the Council • If you move, change your address in Banner. • LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE ISBE Rules – No professional education or content course with a grade lower than a ‘C’ may be used toward certification, endorsement, or approval – No professional education or content course taken for CR/NC, Pass/fail, or Proficiency Credit may be used toward certification, endorsement – Advance Placement credit MAY be used Who to Contact • Degree Requirements (including Area of Concentration) – Michael Parrish • Certification Requirements – Council on Teacher Education – Advice on endorsements do not supersede degree or AOC requirements-always check with Michael regarding your plans.
