What We Do

• Monitor compliance with the Common Assessment Plan (CAP) – www.cote.illinois.edu/about/governance/policies/CAP_Undergraduate.pdf

– Criminal Background Check (more later) – Annual Bloodborne Pathogen Training – GPA (content, professional education, UI, and overall) (2.5) – Grades in content/professional education (C or better) – Safety Education Module – Mandated Reporter Training/Acknowledgement – Student Teaching Agreement – Tests (Basic Skills, Content Test, APT, edTPA) (more later) – TB testing

What We Do (continued)

• Answer Licensure Questions • Answer Endorsement Questions • Complete Final Audit for Licensure/Recommendation for licensure

Endorsements

• An endorsement is a statement appearing on a license that identifies the specific subjects (at various grade levels) that the license holder is authorized to teach • All will be endorsed in Elementary Education: Self-Contained General Education (k-9)

Endorsements (continued)

• Requirements are listed in our website • Middle grade endorsements (grades 5-8) – Content specific (there is no “generic” middle grade endorsement) – Typically 18 hours in subject • Exceptions: Math/English as a Second Language/Bilingual education – Recommend at least two endorsements – State needs: math, science, foreign language, ESL, bilingual

Endorsements (continued)

• All middle grade endorsements require Middle Grade Coursework • CI 410, EPS 427, EPSY 430 (if from this campus) • Online through UI (Summers) • Other institutions (link on CoTE website) • Most students take between junior/senior year • Do not delay taking these courses as middle grade endorsements may not always be available.

Endorsements (continued)

• Social Science requirements met (If MG courses are taken) • Close in General Science (14-18) – Most physical and life science courses count • Close in Language Arts (13-20) – English, Journalism, Speech, Creative Writing, BTW, CWL – Courses outside of these areas should check with Council • Area of Concentration gives you a start (if not finish requirements) • May use Gen Ed courses if they apply

Endorsements (continued)

• Foreign language – 5-8: 18 hours of coursework • Recommend you take/pass the content test even though it isn’t required as that would make you “highly qualified” – K-4: 24 hours of coursework and pass test – 9 th grade: 24 hours of coursework and pass test

Testing

• Admission based partially on your passing Basic Skills test (now called the Test of Academic Proficiency) • If you are using the ACT/SAT in place of the Basic Skills test, be sure to create an ISBE account AND request ACT OR SAT send your test scores directly to ISBE • Directions for this are on the COTE website (via a link from the main page) • If you do not do this, you will eventually be thrown out of the program

Testing (continued)

• No additional licensure tests taken first year of program • Elementary/Middle Grade (110) – Must take/pass prior to student teaching (state law) • Assessment of Professional Teaching: Grades K-9 or Pre K-12 (either is acceptable) – Generally taken during student teaching but may take on the same day as content test.

ISBE Rules

– No professional education or content course with a grade lower than a ‘C’ may be used toward licensure, endorsement, or approval – Cannot use Credit/No Credit, Pass/Fail, or Proficiency Credit toward licensure, approvals, or endorsements – Advance Placement credit MAY, however, be used
