What is voice over IP The future of Voice over IP How Voice over IP will affect 911 calls How Voice over IP can be used to assist the 911 Dispatch Centers What is voice over IP Voice over Internet Protocol. A technology for transmitting ordinary telephone calls over the Internet using packet-linked routes. Also called IP telephony • Originates in IP over a Broadband Connection • Unique CPE (adapter or IP phone) • This CPE is essentially the same as “cordless phone” technology in that if power goes out, so does phone; phone can be physically moved at the whim/will of the customer • Nomadic • Anywhere you can get a high speed Internet connection. • Provides integrated capabilities and features that allows the end user to manage personal communications dynamically. • Rich features and functionality • Follow me • Distinctive ring • Voice mail over the internet • Selective call answer/selective call forward At its core, VoIP service is the 100-year voice product delivered over a new technology that enables lower price points and advanced features.
