SENTENCES
C LAUSES

Clauses are either subordinate or independent

Independent clauses can stand alone; they have
a subject, a predicate, and express a complete
thought


Example: Mr. Smathers loves Ms. Holicky.
Subordinate clauses CANNOT stand alone;
they don’t make sense on their own

Example: Because she is amazing.
S ENTENCE VS. F RAGMENT

A sentence must have a subject and a predicate and
express a complete thought.


Example: The girl in the house made cookies.
A fragment lacks either a subject, a predicate, or a
complete thought.

Example: The girl in the house.
S IMPLE S ENTENCE

A simple sentence contains one independent clause
and no subordinate clauses.

Example: Mr. Smathers loves Ms. Holicky.

This is a simple sentence because it stands alone.
There is one subject (Mr. Smathers), one
predicate (loves) and one direct object (Ms.
Holicky).
C OMPOUND S ENTENCE

A compound sentence contains two or more
independent clauses and no subordinate clauses

Example: Mr. Smathers loves Ms. Holicky and
Mr. Miller loves Ms. Holicky.

Two independent clauses (Mr. Smathers loves
Ms. Holicky, Mr. Miller loves Ms. Holicky)
combined with a conjunction (and).

Both clauses can stand alone
C OMPLEX S ENTENCE

The complex sentence contains one independent
clause and at least one subordinate clause

Example: Mr. Smathers loves Ms. Holicky
because she is amazing.

One independent clause (Mr. Smathers loves Ms.
Holicky) and one subordinate clause (because she
is amazing).

Subordinate cannot stand alone
C OMPOUND -C OMPLEX S ENTENCE

The compound-complex sentence contains two or
more independent clauses and at least one
subordinate clause

Example: Mr. Smathers loves Ms. Holicky, but
Mr. Miller loves her more because she flirts with
him non-stop.

Two independent clauses (Mr. Smathers loves
Ms. Holicky, Mr. Miller loves her more)
combined with a conjunction (but) with a
subordinate clause (because she flirts with him
non-stop)

1. Easter Island, which is also known as Rapa Nui, is a
small Polynesian island in the South Pacific.
2. The island is the most remote inhabited place on the
planet.
3. The Polynesians were among the most accomplished
sailors in the world; they are especially known for
their skill at navigation.
4. The earliest evidence of people on Easter Island dates
from around A.D. 700, but the island may have been
inhabited earlier than that.

5. The island is best known for its giant stone statues with
long noses and pursed lips.
6. The statues, which are called moai, were carved out of
volcanic rock, and some of them were placed upright
on platforms called ahu.
7. The moai that were set up on platforms were
transported as far as six miles from the quarry, but no
one knows for certain how.
