 ICT is an acronym for Information Communication Technologies.
 A good way of thinking about ICT’s is to consider all the ways digital technology
exist to help individuals, businesses, students and teachers.
An ICT is not just a computer, it is your phone in your pocket, your email, your digital
TV. The list is long and ever changing.

IPADS and the classroom. An evolution in one minute.
So Why the iPad and Why now?
Digital Technologies are changing the way we live and work, and classrooms are no exception.
An iPad can offer unprecedented access to resources and opportunities for learning and education.
The portability as well as their flexibility make them a perfect addition to a classroom environment.
The use of the iPad can create an engaging and stimulating classroom that when implemented
correctly can greatly enhance learning outcomes for all students.
Technology is ever changing and ever valued in this digital society. Therefore teaching children to
stay current and ahead of the game is a valuable tool for life long learning.

Creation
An iPad is a one on one device which allows students to become creative individuals in the classroom. It is a
combination of allowing students to access the internet and the use of the one on one iPad which makes it
more possible to develop their learning at their own pace and speed.
It can be used across all facets of the Australian Curriculum. It also enables a teacher to manage the
integration of literacy and numeracy into lessons that include the Science, Social Studies and History Strands.
An iPad can be a used to allow teachers to transform traditional classrooms into creative learning classrooms
(Jahnke, 2012). This is valuable, as students learn from mistakes and also learn at their own pace. A
classroom that recognizes individuals, is a classroom that is more likely to develop a deeper learning outcome
for the students involved.
An iPad enables the production of creative works for assessment, and also allows parents to see the learning
involved due to their mobility to and from the home.
The iPad allows children to develop unique work that is vibrant and engaging. The scope to develop students
into flexible learners who value creativity is ultimately aided by the use of one on one iPad classes. The
possibilities for learning are endless, and are simply up to the imagination of the child and how they
communicate their ideas (Ashman and Elkins, 2012).

one of these is Book Creator.
It enables students to create
individually or collaboratively a
digital book which includes text,
images, video, and audio. It can
be uploaded or merged to
create one larger book
showcasing the children’s work.

Collaboration
The iPad has the ability to become a device which is used in a one on one activity or a group activity.
Children using iPads in the classroom frequently help one another to navigate, and share their triumphs, together
as they explore new content and apps. The collaborative effect of the iPad enables a teacher to take on many
different roles in the classroom including discussions, modelling, and coaching. This enables students to access
better levels of assistance from the teacher and therefore a higher level of interaction between teacher and student
(Milman, Carlson-Bancroft & Boogert, 2012).
Collaboration is an effective teaching strategy which encourages peer support and improves student outcomes. It
enables students to retain more information due to the hands on interaction.
The more success students achieve, the more likely they are to develop critical thinking.

Blackboard for iPad can provide an interactive mobile learning experience. It uses real life
animations,
and sounds. It allows a hands on approach to mathematics and allows children to draw, group
and design
solutions for mathematical problems.
With each child holding and writing their own answers, the teacher can see each individual iPad
when held up to ascertain whether the children understand the concept and can move on.

Communication
We live in a society that shares everything. From online news sites, to photos of our children and
special events on social media. Allowing children to communicate and be active members of our digital
society is more likely to prepare them for university and for their future careers.
The Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians is a document that acknowledges
major changes in the world and how they place new demands on Australian Students. It suggests that
one of the goals for Australians to become successful learners hinges on them being confident and
creative individuals and also their ability to be active and informed citizens. The iPad enables students
to become active and engaged in their school and the community (Myceetya, 2008)
Teaching has changed and many teachers will share their ideas and resources with others online. A
sharing of resources enables teachers to access and use a much larger pool of information to create
lessons and use ideas.
An iPad allows teachers and students to share their work. This can be done via websites and or social
media. iPads enable a link to be formed to the world outside the classroom. This link to the outside
world can often be just what children need to understand a concept and develop their own thinking and
ideas.
