The aim of this work package was:
 To evaluate the performance of existing ad-hoc buildings designed
and constructed specifically as energy-efficient naturally ventilated
buildings
 To identify the advantages and shortcomings of natural ventilation
strategies

The Monitoring Campaigns
Objectives of
WP 2

The 19 buildings selected were monitored under winter and summer
conditions

The following parameters were measured in all of the buildings:
 Temperature
 Internal air quality (H2O, CO2, …)
 Ventilation rate
 Wind outdoor: direction and velocity
 Wind indoor: velocity

The parameters were measured in 4 rooms and 1 corridor for a
minimum of one week

JOULE
NatVent
1. The challenge is to provide comfortable conditions within an energy
efficient building.
2. It is essential to understand what natural ventilation actually is.
3. Ventilation for IAQ should optimise both IAQ and energy efficiency
4. The required air flow rates for summer comfort are much higher than
for IAQ control and the thermal mass of the building must be
accessible
The NatVent
Buildings
Final Conclusions (2|)
5. Achieving comfortable conditions in the summer requires more than
just high ventilation rates

NatVent
6. Successful design involves more than simply estimating air flow rates
7. The creation of an attractive environment for innovation is extremely
important
8. Natural ventilation can be an attractive option, but NOT the only
option
