Applied scientific research and information institute for the Belgian construction sector.
The BBRI is set up in 1960 and is at the disposal of construction companies, the
industry, designers and authorities. The institute has 163 staff members, among which
85 engineers.

The Division for Building Physics & Indoor Climate comprises two laboratories:
Acoustics and Hygrothermics and Indoor Climate, with 7 researchers and 5
technicians.

The main working areas of the latter
laboratory are:
 the measurements and modelling of the
themal ande solar characteristics of
materials & components.
 the measurement and modelling of
ventilation and indoor air quality,
 studies of the thermal performance and
the indoor climate of buildings.

An important part of its research is focused on the analysis of the thermal
behaviour of buildings and indoor climate installations. Considerable
experience and knowledge is available on the control of natural ventilation
and HVAC installations in buildings.

Recently a predictive control system has been developed to improve the
efficiency of BEM Systems.

In the framework of Natvent, a
design tool for the use of night
cooling with natural ventilation
in office buildings, intended for
architects and engineers, is
developed. Two prototypes of
night cooling systems were
build.

A company that keeps Building
In the late 1970’s the Willan Group, a
long established building and
development company, identified the increasing
problem of condensation in roofs - created
ironically, by improving standards of draught proofing and insulation.
Determined to find a solution the
company invested in an extensive research
programme into building practices world wide. A
direct result of that commitment was the founding
of Willan Building Services in the early 1980’s as
a specialist sales and marketing company
