WG5 - Magnetic and Other Geoscience Data and Infrastructures
Up to now, 31 RI Questionnaires were
submitted into the EPOS Collaborative
areas. The collection is rather inhomogeneous, which results already from the
scope of the WG. The RIs can be sorted
out (with some simplifications) into 5
clusters. Some infrastructures would
better fit to another Working Group. It is
indicated in the last column of the table.
RESEARCH VESSELS AND MARINE
RESEARCH
Three multipurpose research vessels
operated by Geological Survey of Ireland
enables offshore and deep sea survey.
R/V Mare Nigrum (see figure) and ROV
GEOS, operated by GeoEcoMar, Romania
are dedicated to multipurpose surveillance
and marine research covering the entire
Black Sea. The project was supported by 2
M€ from the EC.
EUXINUS is a joint Romanian-Bulgarian
marine observation and early-warning
system and was also supported by EC
Structural Funds.
INTERMAGNET
The INTERMAGNET is a global network of
co-operating digital magnetic observatories
adopting modern standard specifications for
measuring and recording equipment in order
to facilitate data exchange and the
production of geomagnetic data products in
close to real time (often within one hour, 3
days delay at the latest).
Data are sent to data collection centres
called Geomagnetic Information Nodes
(GIN). Recently there are about 120
INTERMAGNET observatories worldwide,
and six GINs, two located in Europe. GINs
also act as data supply centres, with data
delivery by electronic mail or by direct
download from web pages hosted at GINs
(http://www.intermagnet.org).
Definitive data are collected annually for
inclusion on a INTERMAGNET DVD and are
also available from the web.
CONDITIONS OF USE FOR DATA
PROVIDED THROUGH INTERMAGNET
The
data
made
available
through
INTERMAGNET are provided for your use
and are not for commercial use or sale or
distribution to third parties without the written
permission of the institute operating the
observatory. Publications making use of the
data should include an acknowledgment
statement. A citation reference should be
sent to the [email protected] for
inclusion in a publications list on the
INTERMAGNET website.
The Hellenic Navy Hydrographic Service
operates an network of tide gauges. The
National Centre of Marine Research
operates
a
network
of
deployed
oceanographic boys. The networks are part
of European Sea Level Service and the data
are also distributed via web http://www.iocsealevelmonitoring.org/index.php operated
by
Intergovernmental
Oceanographic
Commission (IOC) of UNESCO. .
ABOUT MAGNETIC OBSERVATORIES
Magnetic observatories play a dual role:
(1) production of variation data with at least
one-minute sampling for the study of
geomagnetic activity
(2) production, at stable sites, of long-term,
continuous records of data of quality suitable
for studies of the secular variations of the
main (core) geomagnetic field; high quality is
achieved by making regular absolute
measurements to determine baselines for
the continuous recordings.
The geomagnetic observatories usually also
carry out repeated measurement on denser
network of so-called repeat stations, These
data could of interest for EPOS.

GROUND WATER AND CO2 MONITORING
CONCLUDING REMARKS
The RI Questionaires involve 19 of 30
European INTERMAGNET observatories.
Some of them are part of multidisciplinary
facilities.
Grounwater monitoring and chemistry
carried out by Geological Survey of Sweden
and Laboratório Nacional de Energia e
Geologia, Portugal, are carried out in the
frame of environmental protection.
The
treatment
of
multidisciplinary
facilities requires communication with
other working groups.
In spite of this, the geomagnetic community
is not yet sure about the degree of
integration of data into EPOS infrastructure.
The geomagnetic data are already well
integrated in the INTERMAGNET and
WDCs, which are world-wide structures. The
conclusion from the last discussions was to
to follow the development of the project and
keep the decision on the form of
participation open.
MULTIDISCIPLINARY FACILITIES
Some infrastructures cannot be easy
separated into single-disciplinary parts from
finacial, organizational or legal reasons. Cooperation with other working groups is
required.

Monitoring of CO2 and groundwater in West
Bohemia is amed at better understanding of
the changes in the regime of discharge and
seismogenic influences in the region of
seismic swarms.
DATABASES AND GIS
LNEG/Portugal submitted questionaire on
GEOSEAS,
which
is
Pan-European
infrastructure for management of marine and
ocean geological and geophysical data
coordinated by BGS. Possible cooperation
with EPOS should be discussed with BGS.
In some cases the multidisciplinary
facilities could be split into more
homogeneous parts.
The question how the geomagnetic data
will be included into (or affiliate with)
EPOS is still open. This issue will be
discussed again during the IAGA
Observatory Workshop in June 2012.
Some infrastructures would better fit to
other working groups.
The WG5 team needs to be recruited in
order to better cover the broad spectrum
of infrastructures.
GIS and data basis infrastructure was also
submitted by Romania.
