Ecuador Travel Study (including the Galapagos) Spring 2013 Linda Eshelman • Ecuador Faculty Lead Program is a joint venture between the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Communications. • You would not only learn about the natural history of Ecuador including the Galapagos but also a bit about Ecuadoran history and culture. Begin by learning (in the classroom) a bit about… • some of the richest and most complex communities of plant and animal life in the world. • many species found nowhere else in the world. • Ecuadoran history and culture. Then the learning adventure begins… • We will fly to Quito, Ecuador and from there we will explore: Rainforests Cloud Forests Mangrove Swamps Páramo High mountain biome with a vegetation composed mainly of giant rosette plants, shrubs and grasses. And then, the Galapagos! What’s the benefit? • You can earn 3 credits (study while you travel) • See things you might not other wise see • Learn a bit more about yourself • It’s an experience of a life time! Tentative Itinerary Day 1-2 Day 3 Day 4-8 Day 9 Day 11-12 Day 13 Day 14 Day 15-19 Day 20 Quito (city tour, San Francisco Cathedral, museums) Mitad Del Mundo (visit to equator and Otavalo Market) Forest Adventures (butterflies, canopy walks, waterfalls, etc.) Patate Indigenous community (dancing, traditional food, etc.) Cuenca (city tour, museums, shopping at the markets) Cajas National Park Mangrove swamps, tour of cacao and banana plantations Galapagos Islands (dolphin swimming, beaches, sea turtles) Guayaquil • Eligibility: Prerequisite: Biology 120 or 141 or Speech 424 Cumulative GPA of 2.5 Signature of Instructor on application Must be at least 18 years of age So what is the process? • Step 1: Look into your finances (costs are estimated to be under $4,000 for 3 week trip), financial aide may be available! • Step 2: See me to let me know of your interest so I can get your name on “the list.” We are limited to 30 students! Deadline for completing the paperwork is December 7, 2012 • Step 4: Get a passport if you don’t already have one www.travel.state.gov/passport • Step 5: Register Spring 2013 for Biology Travel Study 491. • Step 6: Attend 10 in-class lectures to prepare for the experience. • Step 7: Depart the week after finals (spring 2013).
