If CLAUSES
A) Put the verbs in brackets into the correct tense. Add a
comma where necessary.
1 If you have toothache, go to the dentist.
2. If Peter does lots of exercise, he'll be fit and healthy.
3. Please call me if you need any help.
4. Sarah will be angry if we don't go to her party.
5. Cathy will be able to go on holiday if she saves enough
money.
6. If you work hard, you may be promoted.
B) Put the verbs in brackets into the correct tense.
1. A: I'd like a cup of coffee.
B: Well, if you hold the baby for five minutes, I
will make it for you.
2. A: I must go to the bank.
B: If you leave now, you will get there before it
closes.
3. A: I can't do everything myself!
B: Well, if you wash the dishes, I will cook the
meal.
4. A: Are you going on holiday this year?
B: Yes, I will go to Spain for two weeks if I
have some time off work.
5. A: I want to cook something special tonight.

C) Put the verbs in brackets into the correct tense to
make correct type 2 conditional sentences.
1. If I were you, I would study for the exams.

country.

enough money.
4. If cameras didn’t cost so much, we would buy
one.
5. John would lend you some money , if you
asked him.
6. He would open the door if he had the key.

D) Put the verbs in brackets into the correct tense
to make correct type 3 conditional sentences.
1. If you hadn’t been in a hurry, you wouldn’t have
forgetten your keys.
2. If he had remembered earlier, he would have sent
her a birthday card.
3. If you hadn’t been ill, you could have gone to the
party.
4. Jason wouldn’t have broken his arm if he had
been more careful.
5. Helen would have got wet if she hadn’t taken her
umbrella.
6. If I had done my homework, my teacher wouldn’t
have shouted at me.
7. You would have passed the test if you had
studied more.
8. If she had closed the gate, the rabbit wouldn’t
have run away.
9. She would have lost her keys if I hadn’t picked

E) Complete each sentence as either a real conditional or
an imaginary conditional sentence using the verb given.
1. If I had arms ten feet long, I would be able to reach the
top of that shelf!
2. Don't worry you've just got a cold. If you take some
aspirin, you will feel better.
3. Some people believe that if nobody ate meat, everyone
would live longer.
4. If I become a famous rock star, I will buy my parents an
enormous house.
5. It says "No Parking." If you leave the car here, the
police will give you a parking ticket.
6. It's not far. If you follow this road, you to a gas
station.
7. If people in cities used bikes instead of cars, there
would not be so much pollution.
8. Actually, it's a very friendly dog. If you touch it, it will
not bite you.
9. If you leave your books on the desk, I will give them
back to you at the end of the class.
F) Write a sentence with If ...for each situation.
1 We don't visit you very often because you live so far away.
If you lived near, we would visit you very often.
2 We don't go out very often because we can't afford it.
If you could afford it you, would go out more often.
3 It's raining, so we can't have lunch on the patio.
If it weren’t raining, you could have lunch on the patio

G) Put the verb into the correct form.

H) Write a sentence with if for each situation.
1 I wasn't hungry, so I didn't eat anything.
If I had been hungry, I would have eaten something.
2 I didn't know that Matt had to get up early, so I didn't
wake him up.
If I had known that Matt had to get up early ,I would have
woken up him.
3 I was able to buy the car only because Jim lent me the
money.
If Jim hadn’t lent me the money, I wouldn’t have been
able to buy that car.
4 Michelle wasn't injured in the accident because she was
wearing a seat belt.
If she hadn’t been using a seat belt , she would have
been injured.
5 You didn't have any breakfast - that's why you're hungry
now.
If you had had some breakfast you wouldn’t have been
hungry now.
