SINTEF Project : New knowledge on Submarine Tailing Disposal, STD (Nykos)
Project idea :
The main objectives of NYKOS is to increase existing knowledge and innovation of new technologies for sustainable submarine
tailings disposal.
Project scientific work :

Significance of Coastal Geological Processes related to STD

Effects of hyper-sedimentation on soft / hard bottom fauna and possibilities of improved re-colonization
•
Development of better modelling tools and criteria of acceptance for STD
•
Concentrator tailing modifications to reduce environmental impact

Verification and field work in 1-2 research fjords

NordMin Call SINTEF-NTNU
Nordic feasibility study for Improved Utilization of Surplus materials
from the present and future mining and quarrying industry
Objective:
Establish a coordinated, Nordic basis for increased, improved and new
utilization of surplus materials from ore, industrial mineral, aggregate and
natural stone production and processing

Short presentation
Industrial relevance:
The NordMin project aims at the following for the industry: Economic benefits and spin-offs, Improved
resource and energy efficiency, Better predictability through the production lifetime, Reduction of
environmental footprint, improved general image issues and improved exchange of experience among
Nordic actors.
Scope of work:
•
Establish a holistic overview of existing and potential new uses and applications for
surplus materials at Nordic and European level.
• Provide basis for how a Nordic waste database can be established, incl. a systematic
analysis and evaluation of available and attainable information and establishment of a
multi-level robust and flexible analyses program for characterization and testing.
Coordinated with existing, on-going/planned national and European initiatives:
• Establish an overview of "the Nordic surplus material pool" from the ore, industrial
mineral, aggregates and natural stone industry, including amounts, fractions,
mineralogy, chemistry, physical properties etc.
• Establish a fundament for new material technology and new and/or improved
applications based on surplus materials.
