Vision
To stage a great Games in a great city leaving great memories and great benefits for all.
Mission
To conduct an athlete focussed Games with excellent competition in a fun and friendly
environment with long lasting benefits for the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia and the
Commonwealth.
Scope and Scale
A simple overview of the size and scale of the Commonwealth Games based
on previous Games data:

6,500 athletes and team officials
•
17 sports – fully inclusive programme
•
Four para sport events
•
18 competition venues
•
30 training venues
•
Over 1,000 technical officials

• >500 TV cameras
• >1,000 hours of live broadcast coverage
• >1.5 billion global TV audience
• >100,000 media stories
• >3,000 journalists/photographers
• >50 sponsors and official providers
• >4 million public transport trips (in addition to normal passenger numbers)

Estimated economic benefit $2billion

There will be in excess of $500m spent on sport and transport infrastructure –
GC2018 will fast track many initiatives

The tourism, construction and events industries are diverse and labour intensive.
To meet the demand there will be employment and skill development, work
experience and learning opportunities

• GOLDOC currently employs 38 staff
• By 2018 GOLDOC will employ around 1000 staff
• More than 30,000 contractors will work in venues and operations during ‘Games
time’

• Limited life (Need to deliver a great games not necessarily the best solutions)
• Scalability (Rapid incline then decline in resources, whilst managing scope and
spend)
• Sponsorship opportunities (unknown at this stage, so a risk in effort / cost)
• Communications and change management (paramount to our success, but we will
have limited change management windows – so we need an adaptable workforce)

• Most significant policies applicable are:

• GC2018 Procurement Framework approved by Director General Council Nov 2013
and supports a “one government” and “value for money” approach.
• Framework objectives:
– Procure quality goods and services, in a timely and consistent manner
– Minimise duplication, process overlaps and risks
– Understand and optimise supply markets
– Coordinate consistent targeted communication
Gold Coast Aquatic Centre
•
State Government and City of Gold Coast joint agreement to accelerate aquatic
centre redevelopment
•
Completed in time for Pan Pacific Swimming Championships - August 2014

Project management administered by Department of State Development,
Infrastructure and Planning

16 month construction timeframe. Practical completion late June
•
Local industry participation high with 96% representation from SEQ
•

Commonwealth Games Village
• Parklands to be redeveloped as a master planned mixed use community
• Will accommodate 6500 athletes and technical officials during GC2018
• Beyond 2018 Parklands will be transformed into a modern residential development
within a burgeoning health and knowledge precinct
• The health and knowledge precinct will be a vibrant, world-renowned community of
ideas, life and innovation
• The precinct will increase economic sustainability of the city promoting a culture of
innovation and competitiveness of businesses and knowledge based institutions
Carrara Sport and Leisure precinct
• Signature precinct for GC2018
• Vision is to create a vibrant and engaging venue space that will attract elite and
community sporting event long after 2018
• Hosting the Opening and Closing ceremonies and athletics program
• Additional sports including badminton to be contested in two multi-sport stadiums
• Construction to commence mid – late 2014
