Types of Sentences
Primary Writing
CCS LA 1.L.1 Produce and expand complete simple and compound declarative, interrogative,
imperative, and exclamatory sentences in response to prompts.
Understanding types of sentences helps students read and write more fluently. Review the anchor charts with
students and use Sentence Practice strips for whole group review of the concept before using this activity in
stations. Add text of your own to reflect current literature or content being studied.

Skill/Objective: (COPY IN YOUR PASSPORT) Types of Sentences
Directions:
1. Work with the students at your station.
2. Take turns reading the anchor charts provided. Be sure
you understand each type of sentence.
3. Spread out sentence cards and punctuation marks. The
tallest person starts by picking up one sentence card.
Read it aloud and tell what type of sentence it is and with
which punctuation it should end.
4. Have the student to the right check your work using the
Answer Key. If correct, keep the card. If incorrect, put it
face down on the table. It is now the next student’s turn.
Challenge: Choose a comic strip. Find a question and an
exclamation. Read each aloud with expression and fluency.
Reflection: Record the following sentences in your Passport:
one declarative, one interrogative and one exclamatory.
