All Separatists are Pilgrims
William Bradford was a leader of a group of
Separatists.
He decided to leave England and start a colony
where they could worship as they pleased.
Bradford asked the Virginia Company for
permission to begin a new settlement in
Virginia.

Squanto? Who is Squanto?
Squanto was a Native American that had been captured
by European slave traders and sold into slavery in Spain.
Later freed, he went to England where he learned to
speak English. An Englishman, who had become his
Friend, helped Squanto reunite
with his tribe in America.
In return for this kindness,
Squanto did what he could to
help the Pilgrims survive in their
new land.
The First Thanksgiving
Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to fish, hunt, and
farm.
For their good luck, the Pilgrims decided to have a
feast of thanksgiving.
The Pilgrims invited the Wampanoag tribe and they
feasted on cornbread, duck, lobster, deer, fish,
pumpkin, squash, berries, and wild plums.
(What is missing?)
The feast lasted three days and included parades,
games, and races.

The Puritans Arrive
The Puritans were a religious group from
England who wanted to “purify” or change the
Church of England.
These were very unpopular beliefs and
because of this many Puritans were put into
jail.
John Winthrop was a leader in the Puritan
community and he believed that the group
should build their own colony in New England.
The Puritans Arrive
John Winthrop told his followers that they
could build a “city upon a hill with all the eyes
of the people will be watching us.”
The Puritans learned valuable lessons from
the early settlers.
In 1630, Winthrop sailed for New England
with about 1,000 colonists and 15 ships loaded
with food, tools, horses, and cows. Thanks to
good planning, the Puritans did not have to
face a time of starvation.
The Puritans Arrive
The Puritans called their colony the
Massachusetts Bay Colony.
They chose a peninsula in Massachusetts Bay
for their settlement. They named this place
Boston.
Boston grew rapidly thriving on fishing, fur
trading, and shipbuilding.
Why did they choose jobs like these to
earn money?

In your notes, write a fact about:
how the Puritans planned their
community?
how the Puritans felt about
education?
Fact and Opinion
A fact is something that can be proven
to be true in all situations.
An opinion can be true for some people,
but not for all. It is a personal view.
