IMechE Membership

Affiliate Membership
• For anyone who is involved in or
interested in mechanical engineering.
• Available to undergraduate students
and apprentices (whilst they study).
• Membership is free for those students
studying a relevant degree and for
apprentices.

Associate Membership
 Is for any graduate with an accredited
degree in engineering or a STEM subject
(Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics).
 If the degree is not accredited, the
academic qualifications will be reviewed.
This is free.

Corporate Membership
 Available for engineers who can demonstrate the
appropriate level of knowledge and skill.
 IMechE membership is aligned with professional
registration.
 Professional registration is for Engineering
Technician, Incorporated or Chartered Engineer.
(Professional registration with the Engineering
Council).
 A Professional Review Interview will be conducted
to ascertain the applicant can demonstrate that
they have acquired the relevant competences
through their initial professional development.

Fellow
 Available to anyone who is already registered as
an EngTech, IEng or CEng or anyone who can
demonstrate significant individual responsibility,
sustained achievement and exceptional
professionalism in their career.
 Existing Corporate Members who are upgrading
to Fellow will be assessed on:

Significant autonomy
Promotion of engineering
Leadership
Involvement in policy and strategy making decisions
Structured approach to CPD


3 Desirable qualities
 Highly specialist knowledge in a specific area of
engineering
 Strong evidence of resource management/personnel
management and development
 Applies significant range of fundamental
principles/complex techniques across a wide
spectrum
2 Optional qualities
 Active development and application of new
technologies in engineering and related areas at a
senior level
 Budgetary and financial control

Routes to Membership
 Traditional Route – MEng plus Professional
Review Report and Interview
 MPDS – (Monitored Professional Development
Scheme), a structured, mentored route over
4-5 years; plus Interview

Academic Alternatives
 CLA – (Career Learning Assessment), a
review as to whether retrospective career
based learning achieved can equate to
Masters level requirement
 Further Learning – for those wishing to
upgrade within grades of membership and/or
registration; review and advice on a forward
development plan to create learning equating
to the Masters level requirement
