young members
do/should want to be
involved?

10
Group answers
Groups were asked to present back their most unusual answer
Why do you think young members do / should want to
be involved in the IMechE?
 Gain access and knowledge of IMechE grants and
bursaries available to members
 The great social aspect, both at meetings and events
like the volunteer conference
 To gain international recognition of your engineering
qualifications, increasing your potential for new jobs,
possibly international
 To gain (networking) links between different
industries, academia and/or knowledge areas

Question
Large group question…
Do you think certain
events appeal more to
young members?
Improving the world through engineering
www.imeche.org
14
Group answers
Do you think certain events appeal more to young members?
Based on the IMechE’s definition of a young member the group felt that as young
members represented a wide variety of the membership events that would interest
registered members would also interest young members.
What makes an event appealing to young members?
The same things that apply to other members

The speaker will be Professor Peter Thiemann of FachHochSchule Süd Westfalen. He started his
professional career as Research Engineer in the Fraunhofer Institute, Dortmund before he went as a
Project Manager for Development of Drive and Automation Systems to Mannesmann Dematic AG, Wetter.
Since 1998 he is Professor for Electrical Machines, Drive Systems and Power Electronics at the SouthWestfalia University of Applied Sciences in Soest. His areas of interest are sensorless control of electrical
drives (PhD students with the University of Bolton), power electronics efficiency, rapid control prototyping
and simulation.

Possible answers
Thinking as a new YM what would stop you volunteering?
And how to address the concerns…








Don’t want to Pressure on yourself – (it can be easier to start with
smaller roles)
Expectations of others (make it clear what you expect someone to do)
Time at a fixed time each week/month– (Consider virtual meetings.
What can you do via email?)
Unable to access the meeting location – (Could someone offer lifts)
Money (even if its expensed) – (Invoice where possible, then people
aren’t out of pocket)
Not knowing where to start – (Give 1:1 quality handover meeting)
Don’t know anyone - (make contact in advance)
Have a list of new ideas for events that young members could do (this
reduces the pressure on young members)
