Get Ready to Color Your
World!
• How to Write an Effective Paragraph
• Materials: When we write, we will
use blue, red, and black pens.
–BLUE is for Topic Sentences (TS)
and Concluding Sentences (CS).
–RED is for Concrete Detail (CD).
–BLACK is for Commentary
Sentences (CM).
2
Step 1: TOPIC SENTENCE
• A Topic Sentence
(TS) is the bottom
bun of a
hamburger.
• TS = first sentence of the paragraph.
It shows the main idea.
• MUST be a controversial statement-something that you have to prove or
argue
3
Example Topic Sentence (TS)
1) The most important theme in
Ender’s Game is leadership.
4
Step 2: CONCRETE DETAIL
• Concrete Details
(CD) are the meat of
the hamburger.
• CDs = facts, quotes,
examples, directly
from the text.
• CDs can’t be argued with—a CD is
evidence that supports your point!
5
Example Text Evidence (TE)
2) For example, Ender is
pushed to his limit and says, “I
don’t care about their game
anymore, Bean. I’m not going
to play it anymore”.
6
Step 3: COMMENTARY
• Commentary Sentences
(CM) are the “extras”
on the hamburger—the
tomato, cheese, lettuce,
mayo—they make it
delicious and keep the
meat sticking to the
bun!
• CMs = your analysis, interpretation,
explanation, or insight into the text.7
TS, CD, CM, CS—Now What?
• CHUNKING
•
A combination of CDs and CSs is
called a “chunk.”
Use a combination (or “ratio”) of 1:2.
That is, for every 1 TE, you will have
2 CMs.
8
Example Commentary
Sentences (2 CMs)
3) This evidence shows that Ender
has been pushed to his limit. 4) Since
he has been pushed to his limit, the
commanders expect him to push
others beyond their limits too.
9
One Chunk: 1 CD + 2 CM
2) For example, Ender is pushed to his
limit and says, “I don’t care about their
game anymore, Bean. I’m not going to
play it anymore”. This evidence shows
that Ender has been pushed to his limit. 4)
Since he has been pushed to his limit in the
game, the commanders expect him to push
others beyond their limits too.
Ratio =101:2
Step 4: CONCLUDING
SENTENCE
• A concluding
sentence (CS) is
the top bun of the
hamburger.
• A CS wraps up the paragraph.
It rephrases the main idea.
11
CS
Therefore, one quality of leadership that Ender learns
is pushing himself and others beyond their limits so
they can beat the Buggers to save humankind.
12
LET’S EAT!
Now you know how to write
a one-chunk paragraph!
Let’s read it all together:
13
Step 6: A Whole Paragraph
1) The most important theme in Ender’s Game is leadership.
2) For example, Ender is pushed to his limit and says, “I
don’t care about their game anymore, Bean. I’m not going
to play it anymore”. . 3). This evidence shows that Ender
has been pushed to his limit. 4) Since he has been pushed to
his limit in the game, the commanders expect him to push
others beyond their limits too. (5) Therefore, one quality of
leadership that Ender learns is pushing himself and others
beyond their limits so they can beat the Buggers to save
humankind.
