→ Aim : assessing the
position of Europe in the
global financial flows,
taking into account the
spatial consequences of

Flows and gateways : maritime flows
World level
• Weight and evolution of Europe in world port
throughput
• Europe in the world maritime network (data on vessel
movements)
• Europe’s maritime gateways: comparative analysis of
foreland specialization, connectivity
Analyses across the 1970-2010 period, for various
commodities (liquid and solid bulks, general cargo,
containers…) and at various levels (port, city, region,
blocks…)
Regional level
• Traffic concentration evolution in Europe
• Port-region and port-city interactions
• Transport integration and intermodalism
Complemented by case studies at local level
Example: the worldwide liner shipping
network (containers). Source: LMIU data
Political cooperation and networks
