NEW HEALTH
TRAINING
REQUIREMENTS
BY THE VDOE
THE PATH THAT LED US HERE
• Gwyneth Griffin, 12 year old middle school student
who suffered cardiac arrest during an outdoor school
activity in Stafford County
• It took 10 minutes for EMS to arrive and during that
time CPR was not attempted
• Her death led her parents to advocate for first aid,
CPR and AED training within schools
• Bills passed within House and Senate to implement
this mandatory training
TWO IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW…
1. Effective July 1, 2013, every person seeking initial
licensure or renewal of a license must provide
evidence of completion of certification or training in
the following areas:
• Emergency First Aid
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
• The use of automated defibrillators (AEDs)
2. Benita and her team have made obtaining this
training EASY!
DIRECTIONS FOR ACCESSING
AND COMPLETING THE CPR,
AED AND FIRST AID TRAINING
COURSE REQUIRED FOR
TEACHER LICENSURE
• Go to:
https://www.schoolspace.henrico.k12.va.us/default.asp
• Log in with your Henrico email username and password.
• Look for the Enroll By PIN section and put
in CPR_AED_and_First_Aid_Course (must be exact!).
• When it asks for a PIN, type in CPRAED and click Enroll.
(case sensitive)
• Once the PIN is entered, teachers will be able to click on the
CPR/AED and First Aid Course from the home page. All
content is located under the Content tab.
• When the course is entered the first time, teachers will only
see the following 4 items:
– HCPS Requirements for CPR, AED and First Aid
– Outline for Training Teachers in AED, CPR and First Aid
– CPR Lesson 1 Folder
– Skills Checklist for Certification
• After reviewing the three documents, go into the CPR
Lesson 1 folder and read the PowerPoints, watch the videos
and complete the quiz.
• Once teachers score 80% or better on the quiz, the next
module will open. Follow the same procedure for each
module.
• Once the 2 CPR and AED modules along with the 11 First Aid
Modules are completed, a certificate icon will appear.
• Print the certificate in Landscape form and turn it into HR
for verification of the CPR, AED, and First Aid Training
Course.
Additional Information
• Optional hands-on classes will be offered thru Staff Development to
obtain Certification in CPR, AED and First Aid. Teachers will need to
show proficiency in the Skills Overview located in the course. The class
will take approximately 1 hour.
• For students, beginning with first-time ninth grade students in the
2016-2017 school year, the bill adds a requirement that recipients of the
standard and advanced diplomas must receive training in emergency
first aid, CPR, and the use of AEDs.
