3.1 Testo in italiano (min 3000 caratteri / characters):
filiere lattiero-casearie partendo dagli strumenti proposti dai Reg. UE 1151/12 e 665/14 e in particolare
3.2 Text in English (min 3000 caratteri / characters):
The research is part of the Interreg project V-A Italy-Austria TOP-Value. The gradual abandonment of
traditional activities and the difficulties faced in promoting local productions, are challenging mountain cultural and
natural heritage and thus the touristic attractiveness of the area. The project aims to support mountain food chains
using the policy instruments provided by the optional quality term “mountain product” as defined by EU Reg.
1151/12 and 665/14. The term has not been implemented yet in the transboundary area and its uptake could be
beneficial to both producers and consumers by adding value and traceability to local mountain products. Project
actions will target regional case-studies in order to identify and suggest solutions to barriers for the adoption of the
optional quality term. The innovative approach consists in empowering the “mountain products” by identifying and
quantifying ecosystem services (e.g biodiversity, landscape aesthetics, animal welfare, emissions’ regulations)
linked to the natural and cultural assets of the area but which are currently hidden into a broader food quality
concept. The identification and quantification of ecosystem services allows not only to support high-quality
products also in terms of social and environmental sustainability, but also to meet the expectations of tourists and
consumers by adopting effective communication strategies on traditional mountain products that contribute to a
lively and attractive transboundary area.
The experimental activities during the 12 months of research fellowship concern the animal welfare and the
GHG emissions in 80 dairy farms in the program area.
Animal welfare measurements will be carried out on the basis of the EFSA protocol targeting small-scale
dairy farms modified after the Welfare Quality® approach. Despite being based on the Welfare Quality framework,
the EFSA protocol differed from the latter on few measures that were withdrawn from the protocol as they were
considered too time consuming in a small-scale setting. Assessments will be carried out 3 times in each farm to
capture the seasonal change in management and husbandry practices. Farm visits will be divided in 2 parts: at
first animal and resources will be assessed in the barn or on pasture, as a second step the farmer will be
interviewed to retrieve data on management practices and farm records.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was developed to assess the environmental impact of industrial plants, but
over the last 10-15 years has been adapted to assess impacts of agriculture as well. This method, as described in
the 14040 ISO standard, allows the evaluation of the environmental impact during all phases of a product or
service’s life. It involves the systematic analysis of production system, to account for all inputs and outputs
associated with a specific product (or service) within a defined system boundary. Researchers have applied LCA
to milk production to obtain valid carbon footprint numbers for raw milk, but there is still room for interpretation. In
particular, when assessing traditional small-scale farms in mountain areas, it is necessary consider that they are
able to use native breeds, to maintain grasslands and their biodiversity and to conserve the traditional landscape.
In this way, multifunctional farms deliver, in addition to the co-product meat, also important ecosystem services
(ES) to the community to which is important recognizing a cost in terms of emissions.

3.1 Testo in italiano (min 3000 caratteri / characters):
chimica quantistica: eterostrutture, nanostrutture, biomolecole.
all'Exascala, in particolare nel WP1 (Designing a sustainable programming model for materials simulations).
3.2 Text in English (min 3000 caratteri / characters):
Density-Functional Theory (DFT) with pseudopotentials and a plane-wave basis set is one of the most used
methods to perform first-principle simulations (i.e. based on the electronic structure) of complex condensed-matter
and quantum-chemical systems, such as hetero- and nano-structures, large biomolecules. In particular, hybrid
functionals, containing some amount of exact (Hartree-Fock) exchange, have proven to be very accurate and able
to correct most of the drawbacks of semilocal functionals (those based on charge density and its gradient only).
The usage of hybrid functionals in a plane-wave basis set is however hindered by the large computational cost
associated to the evaluation of the exact-exchange contribution between delocalized orbitals. In the simple case of
an insulator with M Kohn-Sham orbitals, for each step of the iterative procedure leading to self-consistenty, at
least M^2 products of Kohn-Sham states must be computed and M^2 Poisson equations must be solved using
FFT, each requiring NlogN floating-point operations (N=number of real-space grid points, which is a multiple of the
number of plane waves used in the expansion of the Kohn-Sham orbitals). Algorithms based on localizing
potentials or on maximally localized Wannier functions have been proposed and sometimes implemented, but
none seems to be at the same time numerically accurate, fast, robust and general-purpose.
The goal of this work is to devise, study, implement and test various possible solutions, in particular those
involving some form of robust and computationally inexpensive localization of wavefunctions. Reduction in both
the number of Poisson equations to be solved and in the time needed to solve each Poisson equation will be
pursued, exploiting localization of the Kohn-Sham orbitals. In particular, a newly proposed algorithm based on
localization of selected columns of density matrix (A. Damle et al., J.Chem.Theory Comput. 2015, 11, 1463) will be
studied and implemented. Fast method to solve the Poisson equations for localized products of Kohn-Sham states
will be devised. The work will build upon preliminary results, obtained with the implementation and testing of the
Adaptively Compressed Exchange (ACE) method proposed by Lin Lin (J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2016, 12, 2242).
The final goal is to have the most successful of the devised solutions implemented in a highly efficient and
parallelized way in the Quantum ESPRESSO distribution of scientific software.
The proposed work will be performed under the joint direction of prof. Giannozzi at UniUd and of Prof. Baroni at
SISSA-ISAS. The work will be conducted in the framework of the activities of the EU-funded MAX – Materials at
the Exascale Centre of Excellence. The successful candidate is expected to hold a PhD in Physics, Chemistry or
related fields and to have experience in first-principle electronic-structure simulations. Previous experience with
the Quantum ESPRESSO software distribution, with parallel computing, or with scientific coding in modern Fortran
is a plus.
